Update: - Just wanted to thank you all for the brilliant responses. There is definitely a common theme among all your answers :-) I've learned and will put it to good use!

  • Quantity = Short Term
    Quality = Long Term

I only do mabey 80-100 manual backlinks per day for my longterm clients.

Results are better than when they buy single packages for 1 run. In this reply by better I mean it lasts longer .

    • According to me if you want to get long term results then do focus on only quality links.
    • I mostly agree with the below post but my suggestion is quality backlinks.. and long long term...

Quantity matters little unless you're aiming for a quick site hit

    • True, But it is also dependent upon what value your targeted site has. For example: If you are promoting a e-commerce site on which you are getting a lot of sales per month then you can consider buying high quality expensive backlinks

But if you money site for example is a micro niche site, targeted for adsense the you can consider buying a lot of cheap backlinks and they do work including forum profile backlinks.

    • Hi
What kind of backlinks do made?
And what's the price of such work if you make it for clients?
      Thanks
    • omg 80-100 a day! thats intense.
  • Quantity backlinks work for a short time.. Quality backlinks work for long time..... If you get 2 backlinks from same theme related websites is equals to 10 backlinks from non related websites.
  • I think Quality as your 2,3 backlinks from high PR sites has more importance in increasing your PR as compared to 200,300 back links from 0 PR sites
  • You know a while ago I would have immediately said quality, but these days I think as long as your link actually gets found by Google and has your anchor text keyword, you're doing ok.

Obviously quality will always win, but I think where 'quantity' often lose value is because you may get 3,000 'rubbish' links that never get found or indexed. So this probably has an effect on your lack of rankings, whereas the 'quality' links you get are indexed and give you a boost.

Go for quality, but if you're gonna go for quantity, make sure you get them indexed.
  • Well, as for me, quality is still the best. Google now is looking after the quality.
  • i prefer only quality backlinks, because quality is more important quantity. if you have quality backlinks then it gives you great results
  • I would defiantly put more focus on quality.
  • Definitely Quality backlinks works for a site..
  • Quality backlinks are good. But if you want a greater outcome, you may combine those two.
  • Of course quality over quantity. Quality will for sure bring more traffic and quantity...lets not even go there.
    • [2] replies
    • Quality shouldn't go over quantity nor quantity. You don't have to choose between those two, but rather do both quality and quantity together with relevancy. Those are what really matters.
    • Google gets smarter every day, it's better to not just try to game SEs with numbers, quality posts/comments are where the difference is made
  • not quantity quality matter dear
  • As stated above, quality is your main factor these days.

Google among other search engines are seeking out quality and throwing away quantity in link building strategies.

They are basically trying to reduce the use of software-based spam that appears on the internet.
  • Quality and quantity both are important. Build quality backlinks from different sources(means quantity should also be there).

    • Quantity and Quality both matters.

but if you are planning for long-term. So first you should make a plan about how much quantity in How many months.

Then decide the avg quality work per day (100 to 150 links)

  • Like others say, quality is better than quantity. But combining those two is also a good idea.
  • Of course, quality is far more better than quantity. You can have lots of back links for your site but only a few of it are real and strong back links that will benefit your blog in its long term process.

Backlinks are more like a foundation or back bone of a website in the Internet. And so, creating a strong back bone would definitely strengthen your website in the SERPs.

    • Quantity backlinks work for a short time.. Quality backlinks work for long time..... If you get 2 backlinks from same theme related websites is equals to 10 backlinks from non related websites.
  • You have to do both to be good. It looks very un-natural if there are all crappy links, or all good ones.
    • [1] reply
    • How would it look un-natural if there were all good links?

  • In terms of backlinks. Quality is #1

A perfect example of this is. Would you rather have 1 edu backlinks, Or 10 regular backlinks? Someone might say "Well... i want the 10 regular backlinks because its more then 1 right?"

Thats where their wrong. You see a edu backlink is more effective and google loves these backlinks more then any other backlinks.
  • Quantity!!
  • It all depends. If you say
    -a million PR1 backlinks and 1 PR10 backlink
it would obviously be a million backlinks.
    -ten PR1 backlinks and 1 PR10 backlink
it would obviously be a pr10 backlink.
    Get my point?
Its hard to say which is which, but it is true that higher quality backlinks lasts longer
    • [1] reply
    • I prefer a large quantity of quality backlinks.
  • I think higher PR quality links and average PR quantity links are good.
  • I my suggestion Quality short term
    • [1] reply
    • Quality backlinks is better than quantity backlinks, but a combination of both is best.
  • Quality = Authoritative and Relative A PR10 about bells linking to you when you sell widgets, may raise your PR, but not add Quality traffic. A Pr5 that talks about why to buy a widget is better imho. You don't want traffic that is not going to convert. Sift out the bad traffic, and focus on the quality traffic. Focus on building relationships with relevant niches, and relevant social media groups, build relationships with your traffic. You want to create customer loyalty.
  • There is no alternative of quality backlinks

100 low quality backlinks = 5 high quality backlinks

  • Quality works best for almost all sites. Of course if your site is in a competitive niche you will have to have quality and quantity.

  • I agree...it's all about quality. Google is cleaning out all the rubbish and by the end of the day it might even hurt to have too many which are crappy ones and were made just for the quantity.....it's like back in the days when they cracked down on keyword stuffing!
Sticking to quality will not just result in plus points with Google but will also get more quality visitor to our sites :-)

  • If we all know that quantity backlinks comes from forum profiles in most case and everyone is saying quality but where do quality backlinks comes from?
Article directories? Blog comments? Socia network? Social bookmarks?
  • [DELETED]
  • Quality and quantity are both desirable when it comes to backlinks. But first preference should be the quality.
  • Both. Only "high quality" links aren't natural and indicate SEO. Same for low quality links. A mixture is what happens in the "real" world. And I feel this "natural mixture is the most effective when building links.
  • Both is right for natural patterns (you'll always have odd links pointing to you when you're successful.)

But ultimately, it's the QUALITY links that will make you rank above everyone else. I have ranked #1 for extremely competitive keywords (in a competitive market, as if that wasn't redundant enough) with 7-9 quality backlinks.

Meanwhile, my competitors had 60+ backlinks and scratching their head.
  • Perhaps one of the most important factor is the speed at which you build links. It needs to be constant. That's why a "blast of profile links" is pretty much useless if you don't do it on a regular basis.

So focus on quality links and try to build them regularly (like every few days or every week). It doesn't matter that much if they are only a few links as long as you keep doing it regularly. Long periods of inactivity will start to decrease your rankings.

Also it's not so good if you build 5000 links this month and only 100 the next month. The key to success is to keep it constant so focus on quality instead of quantity! Of course if you can build 5000 links every month then more power to you but make sure you can keep it up!
  • There are a lot of back links from this forum. Do they need to be relevant to the topic, or does it have some benefit just to have one there? Is it much better to have hundreds of back links, even if they have no relevance to the page title? I notice that a lot of experienced warriors have no link in their signature. Why is that?
  • Quality, theme related links are better as you need fewer links to rank well.

Off-course Quality is better than quantity....
  • Quality backlinks in high quantity will give the best results.

  • Using backlinks as an example, put yourself in this situation, regarding relevancy, quality, quantity, etc.

If you had a question you needed an answer to, regarding the history of Presidents of the United States - who would you trust more?

1,000 individuals off the street (quantity)
100 individuals off the street who once studied history (relevancy)
1 individual who is the actual President of the United States (quality)

As you can see, the obvious answer would be asking the President. Next, you'd rather trust 100 individuals who actually have some idea about the question. Thirdly, and lastly, I'd go with 1,000 random indivuduals.

Links work the same way. Go quality, relevancy, than quantity.
  • With Quality Comes Quantity
  • I would go with quality every time, one good backlink from a high PR site is worth more than many from PR 0 or PR N/A sites
  • as per me quality is more important because if we have quality so we increase our quantity
  • Yeah, no doubt about it, quality is the key. Google wants to make sure you're reputable and relevant.

You get that through quality backlinks, not quantity.
  • I go for both. This brings the best results no matter what people say
    • [1] reply
    • Of course both is best. But to put it in perspective of which is actually more valuable between the two...

I'd rather have 5 quality backlinks than 10 no-quality backlinks.

Quality and Quantity is of course always desirable.
  • Easy both mashed together
  • you have this, both.. getting backlinks is not only in the Quality, you have to increase your Quantity too. You have it balance.
  • Put it this way, if all you have is quantity, then it's not going to work and you may find that your backlinks are with sites that have no relevance to you or your niche.

In other words, it's a bit like this analogy:

You may have a lot of Facebook friends, but you don't really know a lot of these people (links), and they don't know a lot about you. If you hang out with people you don't know, you start to develop a profile that is irrelevant.
If you ever needed these so-called "friends" most would probably not help you.

However, if you have real friends (links) who share similar interests and genuinely communicate with you and add value to you and you life, then they would be considered quality friends.

All that to say, lets say your niche was religion, and you had backlinks from the Pope, the Dalai Lama, and other top spiritual leaders, then Google would consider these links as pretty powerful.

But, if your niche was fitness, and you had backlinks to a donut factory, a greasy spoon diner, and a bunch of unrelated sites that are the exact opposite of fitness, then Google would consider these links as pretty lame.

I'd rather have 10 solid backlinks with relevant and significant sites, than 100 backlinks to sites that have nothing to do with my niche.
  • Quality should be paramount to quantity. Since you only need a few quality backlinks to start seeing improvement in your ranking.
    • [1] reply
    • Thought id chip in here too... i have a few pages that are pr3 and pr4 that are mainly gettin their pr from a relatively low number of high pr unrelated niche forums (about 50 or 60 links to each), but although their pr is higher than a lot of the pr of google's first page competitors, im still on page 2 or 3... so i reckon il have to start beefing up the quantity next. Just goes to show tho, that quality will only get you so far
  • Quality if you're linking directly to your main site.

Quantity if you're trying to get links to your site indexed.

  • I believe to get quality backlinks instead of quantity. if you get large number of backlinks but they are not for long time then it will affect your rankings. for quality and permanent backlinks you can use prlog.org, ezinearticles.com. hubpages.com etc......
  • Quality is much better then Quantity. If you are able to do only 1 or 2 high PR do follow with same niche sites, then it's more valuable then 30 links with pr 0 no follow non theme links.

In other words, will 100 mediocre tanks defeat 1 great one in a battle?
    • [2] replies
    • I don't think you can really make that comparison. Personally, I'd much rather take a single PR1 (dofollow) link over 100 PR N/A links.

I basically look at it as "quality" to my main sites and "quantity" to sites that are LINKING to my main sites.
    • Don't tell Hannibal or Alexander that they needed greater numbers...

  • I think quality is imp. than quantity but for temporal purpose quantity is not bad.
  • Always go for the quality.
  • quality is more important than quantity.
  • The quantity and quality both links are necessary for web site PR. But the think is that
You should have to make the quantity with the quality links.

  • Both are important. If you have doubt then just PM me and I will show you lot of proof. Of course 1 PR9 backlinks has lot of value than lot of PR0 or PR1 links. But it is easy to say, in reality it's really too tough to get actual PR9 links. So, when I am unable to get PR9 links, definitely I have to go for quantity(PR0 - PR6). It depends..
  • For those who have attempted your luck with online marketing, blogging, internet affiliate marketing and all sorts of individuals other online income generating techniques i quickly know you've had the knowledge getting back links, am I right? Among the first stuff you hear whenever you find out about getting back links and where you'll get them from is to buy back links from very quality sites because quality back links are superior to quantity, but can you explain that?

The main reason people tell get quality back links happens because each back links is sort of a election and also the more you've from reliable and trustworthy sites the best your website is going to be. This is actually the problem you're putting all of your eggs in a single basket. Consider this, let's say the all mighty Google decides to alter their formula again and ranges from quality to quality plus quantity? I wager lots of people could be battling to obtain more links as opposed to just quality links.
