Hello everyone I've got a newb question about SEO and keyword\domains.

If I'm building a site that targets a specific town, for example Westchester County, New York, and targeting the keyword plumbers for lead gen, and have a mix of the town and plumbers in my domain, would it be easier to rank this higher on google vs a website that targets all of New York state, and have the user input which county or zip they live in. I would have a mix of NY and plumbers in the domain. Thanks everyone Roc

    Hey Rock,
I think i understand this question correctly.
It will all depend on multiple factors.. Optimization, Content, Keyword Density and yes Domain can bring a small factor to the table..

It's probably easier to rank a site for a specific town as for the state. However, the SE traffic for the town is probably limited, depending on the size of the town.

If you do create a statewide site, I suggest you don't have the user enter their zip into a search form, as the engines won't follow the search box. Instead, list the options as links on the home page.

On a side note, you may get better results using Craigslist, Twitter and Facebook for something like this.

If your town is too small, and the state is too big, you might consider a county that contains the various towns. Or if the area of the state includes a "regional name" that is commonly known, it might work.

For example, Johnson County, Idaho, or Southwest Washington.
