SEO Powersuite for KW Research ?

Hi all,

First and foremost, allow me to point out that I am a beginner in the SEO world and I am very happy to have found this forum, as well all know that learning SEO s no easy task and everyone has their own way of doing it.

With that being said, I'd like to ask if anyone is currently using SEO Powersuite's Rank Tracker to conduct keyword research. I've recently purchased the software and I love it's features, but figuring out the method to do keyword research can be daunting. I'm wondering if other users can give some insight as to their methods or what works best for them.

From what I understand, it's best to start with "exact match" to get an estimate of how much traffic I could potentially get for a certain keyword or phrase and find the keywords most relevant to a client's industry with low competition and a high volume of searches. Any insight to this ?

I'm really looking forward to all of the information and educational insight I will learn here on WF. I'm just hoping that this forum is susceptible to questions, even the "stupid ones" that usually cause a flame storm from the SEO "gurus" who like to shame you for your lack of knowledge. We all start somewhere don't we ?

I use SEO Powersuite Rank Tracker for keyword tracking in the SERPs, but to be honest I haven't used it for keyword research itself.

Hmm. I think I'll have to try that now. Curious Georgia crops up her head.

Passage of time while I go look... Hey, I didn't even know some of those methods were in there. I just thought it grabbed the Google Keyword Tool data.

I'm thinking that I'd try out a few of those methods outside of Rank Tracker to determine which ones give you the results you feel most helpful. THEN start using them in Rank Tracker. You don't want to mess up an ongoing project with experiments. In addition to keyword tools, I do use Related Searches and Google Trends regularly.

Thanks for your reply! It seems as though SEO Powersuite has been updated a lot since it's conception and it's great for keeping track of where you rank. But, I'm beginning to think that for keyword research it may be wise to follow your suggestions and use a different tool (ie. Google's Adwords) and then import that data into Rank Tracker.

On the other hand, the "suggest" function in RT is great for KW research, but it's all centered around KEI and sometimes I question those values.

Should I be concerned with KEI or should I focus more on competition and global/local search volumes to decide ? Is there a formula to use ?

I did a quick related terms search on one of my projects. Some of the keywords were odd, but I found a few good ones on the skim. And it was fast.

I'd say that Quick and Dirty is going to be its main useful feature.

If you really want to get deep into great keyword research, Jack Duncan's got an inexpensive keyword research teaching product that is very helpful. And his tools are good, too.

You can search on his name, and John Williamson (also here) has a link to a couple of good reviews of his products if you want to read more.

My personal experience with keyword research is to define your methodology and then go looking for automation for it, rather than trying to figure out how to make the tool produce what you want instead of what they've designed it to do.

And with KEI, it can be very skewed depending on competition numbers. A lot of the good keyword methodologies I've been reading lately are trending away from absolute number-data definitions for success, like using KEI or exact match competition numbers or stuff like that.

It always seems to come down to using tools to generate big lists, narrow them down with some reasonable automation, and then apply the old noggin for the real decisions.

And as an avid tool-user, that drives me nuts. I'm a financial person and I *like* numbers. But keyword research is not 2+2=4. Too many variables.

Thank you very much for the information. When you say to go looking for automation...could you elaborate on that? In theory, could I use Google KWT to come up with an initial list of keywords, then use rank tracker to build that list...then narrow it down and use the GKWT again to get "true" numbers using an exact match search and then make a decision baaed off of that data? And then of course monitor the rankings in RT?

Yeah, on search for automation, I was suggesting you pin down which tools you want to use to speed up the process, and incorporate those into your research process.

So, for example, after I do my market research (usually involving some brain work and also trend tools), I turn that over to keyword research and brainstorm a starting list from GAKT, and then go deep and wide with Keyword Sniper 2. When I'm ready to hone in on a primary keyword, I sometimes use MicroNicheFinder and sometimes Market Samurai. Both have strengths, but different ones. I don't like to do mass comparisons in MS because the interface is slow for me. But it's great for that last round of looking for a solid niche keyword to work from.

I've actually got half a dozen little keyword tools that I use from time to time that may have one strength or another, including Traffic Travis (back when it was actually free) and sometimes Keyword Elite 2, although I haven't used either as much as I used to.

I'm going to miss the Google Wonder Wheel for LSI, but Jack Duncan's Ultimate Keyword Theme Extractor is kind of handy there (paid, though). I just got it recently and really like it.

Now, I'm a hardcore research person, so I have a rather in-depth market and keyword research process. Not everyone takes it to the extreme I do. And I don't do the whole ball of wax on every keyword set I'm looking for.

But that's why I recommend designing the process before looking to automate. Then you can find tools to do parts of the task, plug them in, use them, and then maybe plug something else in for another task. Keyword research by hand is really time-consuming, which is why I recommend automating what you can.

Just don't trust everything to the machine. That noggin you have should always be the deciding factor. No keyword tool can take its place. They just speed up the stuff in the middle.
