Asking for List Building Advice

Good Afternoon All,

I recently gave into everyone telling me the "money is in the list" advice and figured if i really want to be successful, I need to implement email marketing into my online ventures.

i added the AWEBER sidebar optin section about 5 days ago and I added the full page "free ebook" optin which is feeded by the "what would seth godin do" plugin yesterday.

so far the only one who has signed up to be part of my list has been myself testing the system to ensure it's running properly.

My site right now is getting between 20-30 unique visitors per day

asking people who have been successful building lists, what can i do to improve my subscribers?

I like the site and think there is some very good content. I am using IE browser and for the optin box in the right column of your site, I see the name and e-mail sections but there doesn't seem to be a signup or subscribe link. I see a red square below the name/email fields. You might want to check how it looks in internet explorer. Also, you may want to include within the e-book comparisons of various tents as that I think is what people are interested in when they are at your site.

yea i have noticed that as well. i guess it depends on what browser format i use. IE i have at work shows it perfectly, meanwhile the IE i have at home shows a small red square. i wonder what it looks like on chrome and firefox.

i may just get rid of that sid bar and just use the one optin page with the WWSGD plugin directing newcomers to it.

20-30 uniques is not that many hits.

On top of this, how exactly are they getting to your site?

If they are all coming from one weird keyword you are ranking for like "what are backpacking tents" and you have your answer in the content of your page, they will not likely opt in.

However if they are coming from a keyword like "free backpacking ebook" your conversion rate will be 1000x better!

You need a decent SEO strategy to build your conversion rate and your traffic.

    Good luck with it

it's actually a free camping ebook but that's besides the point

all of my traffic, well atleast 98% of it coming from SERPS, most likely google. i'm hitting keywords like Alps Backpacking Tents, Ultralight backpacking tents, backpacking tents, etc.

people who are looking up backpacking tents will surely be interested in camping. well at least that's what i'm banking on

That's correct, but maybe too broad for just 30 people.

Get 100+ people on your site per day through these keywords and you should see 1 or 2 opt-ins every couple of days.

Yes, they will be interested in camping, but they may not be interested in downloading an ebook.

My advice would be to set up a new page dedicated just to your giveaway and newsletter and do some heavy SEO on it for more targeted keywords like "free camping ebook", etc.

That way, your conversion rate will be extremely high because searchers are looking for EXACTLY what you are offering. So even a small amount of traffic should attract a good number of opt ins.

        Cheers,
        Dave
