Can google penalise an IP Address or host?

Ok this is possibly a very stupid question but I just want to check.

If I have two websites, one good and one just for experimental seo techniques (such as use of an article syndication feed - see other thread on Free Traffic System), could they penalise my good site if i use methods that they don't like on my experimental site?

Just want to check before I try anything out as I have an experimental site with the same host and don't want to cause any problems with my real site.

Thanks

im not 100% but i dont think that will be a problem. unless you are using your experimental site to get links to your good site.

It should just be the site that gets penalty, not the hosting account.

    Does anyone know any different?

If they detect an iffy site, they can certainly do a manual review of all the other sites hosted under that ip or Class C cluster. What you may get is a mass de-indexing of similar sites. I am absolutely sure about this because this has happened to me a number of times before. Usually they will only ban the bad sites but I have seen indiscriminate banning before. I have had a site that was banned that contained 100% unique quality content. It was a M.Sc thesis and the only reason why I think it was banned was because it was on a blacklisted server.

What I am not sure is whether a penalty can be applied by automated methods. To be 100% sure, it is always a good idea to spread your sites among different webhosts.

This is actually a good question. The manual review thing seems to be more than plausable. If they complete a manual review your good site should pass I guess and be unnaffected. Although having said that it seems like Google can and will do what ever they like logical or not.

I don't think Google does manual reviews too often.... They would have to have a lot of employees. Quite a lot of sites in their index Maybe they do manual reviews for very very bad stuff.

yes ip is very important in this matter. An american ip is very preferable for this purpose. you should use different proxies for that purpose to get good results.
