Also you can build links to your site and maintain your consistency when doing link building. And yes, unique contents will help you a lot.

After the panda update, your best bet to stay in the game for long is to build unique backlinks. Of course, you can manually find blogs to guest post, or you can find a service like BMR.

I think ALL sources are important, you CANNOT isolate 1 source saying it is the best. If all your links come from article directories, you will not rise my friend. (Anyway article directories are becoming less and less important).

So try to build backlinks from following sources:
1) Blog comments
2) Guest blogs
3) Article dirs
4) Pad file submissions
5) Podcasts
6) Web 2.0 properties (hubpages, squidoo)
7) Forum profile links
8) Social bookmarks
9) PAID = Blog networks (linxboss, linvana, traffic kaboom, etc.)

Anyway, so only when you spread your backlinks everywhere, and at quality sources, will you see good rankings.

Quality back link is always better then the quantity link so you have to decide which type of link can help you a lot.

I think the first thing you should focus on the content of your website, onpage optimization factors so that the best, then you or like conducting offpage effectiveness of SEO will be higher

Well! profile links are not good stay away from them. Try to use methods that will take some sweat and elbow grease. Guest Blogging is the most powerful way to get backlinks and also participating in various communities and forums. Do not go for spammed blog commenting.

Profile signature do contribute a lot in improving your backlinking structure... But when it comes to comparing backlinks from different sources, there are so many things to check.

Website's reputation, its relevancy, whether its dofollow or nofollow etc.

And if you are asking about Ezine (specifically), Ezine links are nofollow now.

Depends on the niche of the website actually.. Though ezine back links are surely good enough in my view.. Rather than back linking madly, try to build links in the related business sites, it will drive some traffic too..
