it sounds daft i know but im just wondering whats the best way to do this

Basically i have a list of herbs i want to add to a page on my blog for reference purposes. The list is on wiki, just a list of words

All i want to copy is the list and then create a reference page on my site that i can link people to when im talking about herbs on other pages.

I cant really think of how i can make this page unique....its just a list of herbs, all the words will be the same

is it ok to do this?

should i include source i got it from on the bottom of the page so google know i not just trying to steal it?

I don't see anything wrong with this as long as you clearly give a reference and credit to wikipedia, not sure if google would see it differently though, can anyone clarify this?

If you just copy the list, it's going to be duplicate content. However, if you add more content to this page other than just the list, you would probably be fine. Also, mix up the order of the list if you can.

Do give a reference back, just for nothing other than being a good net citizen. Google won't be able to read that as a reference, though. It will just read as a link.

An important note on this as well - In reality, if it is just one page of many on your site and you are not worried about that particular page ranking well, it's not going to hurt you from a duplicate content standpoint.

you can take just about anything off of wikipedia. It's
hardly anything that's copyrighted. In fact, they pride
      themselves on this.

The only thing you can't copy is their logo, and of course
anything copyrighted that idiotic users ad.

That's the whole point of wikipedia. To give free use to anyone
to change or add anything without worrying about a copyright.

Is it smart to use some of the stuff? I once copied a list, modified
it slightly. Beats reinventing the wheel.

I think duplicate content is more of a threat when its a whole paragraph.

  • ok thanks, i think ill just add the list and give a note back to wikipedia, over the next week or 2 ill just add a few paragraphs describing each herb and what they are good for.

The rest of my site is unique so i doubt it will be too much of a problem
