Joomla and SEO...Does anyone know how to get Joomla permalinks to look like "pretty" WP links?

I've searched high and low on the internet, and I've seen plenty of sites that use them. But, for the life of me, I can't figure out the configuration for the Joomla permalinks. I hate the way Joomla looks out of the box, and it seems like it's more than just a plugin/mod that will do the trick.

Can someone offer some help here?

      worthless answer.

real answer is. YOU CAN NOT(if you can please let me know, cause I want to know how to do it too :-] ) have pretty links in joomla. and it kinda sucks because of that. along with some other things that wordpress can do a lot nicer.
really all depends on the user who's using it. some of my clients are not as sophisticated and they want things to be simple, like wordpress. where they can edit, create pages with their own names (permalinks) without having to go through the whole joomla university to learn how to turn on search engine friendly links etc. which at the end of the day is still not the same as the pretty permalinks. :-P

I don't know if you have already found a solution to your problem or given up on it, anyway, follow these steps to enable search engine friendly URL's for Joomla and it will resolve your problem, if you have any problems pm me for any other help with configuring your CMS.

        1) Confirm that your web hosting company support's Apache and mod_rewrite.
( most web hosting providers do support this functionality )
        2) Access your web host using an FTP client
        3) Navigate to the root directory or Joomla installation directory.
        4) Select the htaccess.txt file and rename it to .htaccess
        5) Now Access the Joomla administrator console
        6) Select the Global Configuration item.
        7) Select the SEO tab
        8) Enable Search Engine Friendly URLs
        9) A popup box will now appear to confirm you have renamed the htaccess.txt to .htaccess
        10) When you view your web the URL's will now look like http://www.site.com/content/view/1/2/ or http://www.domain.com/Section_Name/C...ame/Item_Name/

    Amber_Writes,

If you can't find the answer then you are probably Googling the wrong terms. Wordpress calls URL rewrites "Permalinks" while Joomla calls them "SEF Links" (Search Engine Friendly).

Workson gave great step-by-step instuctions for how to do create SEF links for Joomla 1.5.

It's almost the same for Joomla 2.5. For 2.5 you can go into the Joomla Admin are and click on "Global Configuration" and check "Search Engine Friendly URLs" to Yes and "Use URL rewriting" to Yes. Then (For Apache Servers) rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess. That will give you search engine friendly links.

However you don't have any control over the structure. So if you want more control over the appearance you will have to install an SEF component or extension. You can find a list of SEF Joomla extensions that can do this at: http://extensions.joomla.org/extensi...management/sef

I use JoomSEF which you can find here: http://www.artio.net/e-shop/joomsef . It will do everything that Wordpress' permalink settings can do.

As for Wordpress Vs. Joomla, that's kinda like comparing hammers to screwdrivers. They are both great tools, each one suited for different jobs.
