Hi Fellow Warriors,

I ll give a gist.

I bought a site paranormalactivity3trailer.com from a friend and the site was ranking well for the term 'Paranormal activity 3'. I was updating contents and was building backlinks at regular intervals too.

The movie trailer was released yesterday and got a great amount of traffic. Got up today morning and saw that my site's exact same position was taken by paranormalactivity3-trailer.com which is owned by the friend who sold me the first site I had mentioned.

I can understand if google has penalised my site or whatever, but how will a similar site take the exact same position. I am more worried about how this happened than the money it could have made.

Any help would be really great.

  • So your friend screwed you over? Did you know he had that site and you would be competing against eachother?

He could be creating more/better content and also building more backlinks to his website.

    • The site doesnt have more content. Backlinks.. possible..

But the site was no where in first page yesterday. How can it all of a sudden take the exact same position where I was ranking. Am puzzled
  • It could be google dance. That is where google moves things around in the listings to experiment. lots of times it will return back go where it was. see where it is in 24 hours. in the mean time, you can build more backlinks.
  • I've never heard of this..so you were 3rd than you got kicked out by his domain?

    • Exactly.. You got it right!
    • If you haven't heard of that then where are you living? Under a rock?

      Sites get displaced constantly.

In fact, your goal is to REPLACE sites in search!

Google likes freshness in a lot of SERPs.

  • As Mikeys mentioned, this can happen sometimes. I have this one site that bounces back and forth into the first page of Google. The key here is to continue building content and backlinks at a steady pace and you'll probably be back up there.

    • Thanks for the suggestions.

I have some Idea about google dance.. This issue is different. My site was one in 1-3 on first page for the last two months. I also agree that my site can be penalized or it might slip a couple of pages due to link building patters and all that.

What I want to know is that, how is it possible for a completely different site only because it has almost similar domain name can just get to the palce where my site was in a day?

      This is something fishy

  • Both domains are only a few months old, so this kind of bouncing around is normal. I think the fact that your position was taken up by your friends site is pure coincidence, unless he works for Google of course!
  • Thanks much everyone for your thoughts.. Will work on it for a couple of days and will update you.

@Bharat - I still cant see my site for the term 'Paranormal activity 3' Thanks for checking though. Will see how it goes..
