Hi all

This may seem like a silly question, but I am going to put it out there anyway:

Many local business owners, where I am from, prefer a .co.nz over a .com/.org/.net. Does this make a difference when you are trying to rank on google for example?

The .co.nz should help with ranking in Google.co.nz

Although it still would be easier to stay away from the less familiar is you are new. Go with what you know.

There shouldnt be any difference in ranking. Personally, I would choose .com over everything else, since it's easier to remember.

    Hi Tracee,

I disagree with some of what's above. It makes a difference to Google searches done from IP numbers inside New Zealand.

It's far from a silly question.

You're in a similar position to someone in the UK thinking about the ".com or .co.uk" question. The possible difference being that in the UK, a .com isn't a handicap regarding the preferences of UK people browsing/searching online.

If your entire market is inside New Zealand, then there's no downside at all to using a .co.nz name, and you should use hosting on a server inside New Zealand, as well, to optimise your New Zealand Google SERP's position. Location is relevant to rankings. There are other threads here which include a link to a video of Google's Matt Cutts explaining all of this. (If you can find them!).

If not, then I think you should go with a .com, because using a .co.nz domain-name may be a slight disadvantage regarding non-NZ searches, and the attitudes of non-NZ searchers/browsers.

If the target market for the business is primarily local i.e NZ based then .co.nz if not then .com.

.co.nz will carry more impact in google.co.nz etc and for anything where the geo IP targetting matters then .co.nz

      Cool, thanks everyone

      Great explanations!

So ultimately, this would depend on the clients target market
      Right, makes sense now.

      Thanks again everyone.

If your target market basically from .nz then choosing co.nz domain is the best option otherwise go with .com domain.
