Do the On-page and Off-Page properly. In on-page first do the meta tags optimization properly. Use proper keyword density in content. Use header tags. Do the image optimization. Create the webmaster account and submit sitemap there.
In off-page do the continuous link building work. Try to get backlinks from related and from high pr sites.

      Hi Jesica

Aswell as doing what James7 suggests it is important to check out the competition for the keywords that you want to rank for.

There's no point if there are millions of competing websites for them. You can use the Google keywordtool external (I use Market Samurai) and only go for long tail keywords where competition will be fairly low but commercial intent is high ie only go for "buying keywords" avoiding the words free or information etc

You need 3 main things to get your keyword ranking on top of Google.

    1. Good SEO optimized article/s
    2. Good on page optimization as post above mentions
    3. Build backlinks to your site

If you get these 3 right you should be on your way to the top of Google, also depends on your keyword and competition as well

I start by finding keywords which have a good amount of searches but low amount of competition. I decided if a keyword has low competition by checking out the top 10 sites ranking for the term and seeing if at least 4 has a PR3 or less, at least 4 have 300 or less backlinks and at least 4 have non-perfect on-page SEO.

I then take the keyword and write a 500 or word so article on it making sure to use the keyword in the title, h1 tag and in the content itself. I then build as many backlinks I can with a mixture of the keyword itself and a bunch of other phrases as the anchor text.

Actually, for me, it depends on the level of competition as to what strategy will I use to get my keyword on top. But as many believe, doing link wheel is a great way to get a particular keyword on top of Google.
