AdSense vs. CPA : What are the difference & What do you focus on more?

I start doing things in adsense sites now. I am curious someone only focuses on adsense more than cpa site based business and some are only dealing with cpa sites... would you share what you prefer and the differences and similarity between two models?
Do you recommend a newbie to start with adsense sites and move on cpa sites?
What I see is that the earning level is higher in cpa business and less organic search engine derived traffic based model. But it is harder to rank due to competition.
