keeping the traffic to a redesigned web site

After radically redesigning my web site with new pages and new file names, etc I wonder if there is a way to redirect each of the old pages to the content of the new pages so that I don't lose the advantage of the old indexed pages.

Is this a good idea anyway - would Google penalize me for this - or should I just bite the bullet and start afresh!

    Hi Luxifia,

    You should definitely use 301 redirects to bring the Googlebot and your visitors to the new urls you have created. This is an absolute must as you can improve user experience, pass on any inbound link juice to the new pages, and avoid having your website littered with 404 errors.

    If you haven't already, submit a xml sitemap to Google Webmaster tools with the new url structure also to help get your pages indexed and ranked quicker by Google.
