Google uses links as proof that a site is good. People link to your site because the value it.

As such, if I was google I would disregard all profile links as they are 'self promoting' your own site and I would disregard any link on a page with more than x number of OBL's. For example, if a page has more than 1000 out bound links surely it is some kind of link page. Maybe easier to look at link density on a page.

With that in mind, I wonder why google gives love to profile links, I believe they do, but I think it would be so easy for them not to.

What you think
#search engine optimization #blog #google #link #obl #profile

  • Last i heard profile links lost a lot of love. But i agree with the OBL. If theres more then 500 or so then it shouldnt be credited because obviously its a spam page

    Good post
  • Google loves profile links? What gave you that idea?
The people that promote that spam here?

Profile links that are in good forums, will eventually be deleted if
the person does not use the forum the way it was intended. And
profiles links on useless forums are not even given a wink.

What do I think? I think you need to do some research on real
    backlinks.

    • Paul,

I didn't say 'google loves' but I can understand how you drew that conclusion from me saying that google 'gives love'. What I should have said was google doesn't completely disregard them as far as I understand it.

Bye the way, did admonishing me make you feel good? Just wondering...
  • They don't. Never really have, IMO. (I never understood the appeal of Angela style packets. Creating 20 PR N/A profile links a month didn't seem like a great way to rank a site.)

Diversity is important. If you want to make profile links a part of your strategy, fine. Just don't make them your only strategy. This can be said for any other type of backlink.
  • Diversity is the Key. Profile links work, but you need other sources to make your keyword to remain at its position.
  • Google has always divided the strength of a link by the number of OBL.

As for the profile links, I think they have been discounted altogether. At least those without unique content have been.
