Someone offline asked me this question today. Actually, the word used was SEO Guru.

I have my own observations and favorites based on my list of tools, etc.

I'm wondering who the warriors would put at the top of their lists and why?

Thoughts?

    me =) haha

seriously... I dont think there are any SEO "Gurus" that just completely blow me away. I learn lessons about SEO all the time ranging from top expert advisers to newbies in this forum and others

Mostly, the best "guru" is you... with trial and error. Use what people teach and test against what people say doesnt work. Eventually you will be the guru making up your own rules.

Thanks for the feed back seoguru1. Honestly, I kinda felt the same way when asked!

A best selling author friend of mine is looking for someone to interview for their next book and asked my opinion....I have some names to share and thought I would invite others to seriously think on it...thanks for the thoughts.

I think the field can vary so much that I also don't have an actual guru in my list. I have many that I learn from but everyone's technique can vary. There are no true stand outs in my mind right now. Some of them I feel also talk about nonsense so they don't give away their secrets.

Thanks App Developers. Appreciate the insight and perspective.

Actually, what crossed my mind first was all the crap tools and software I've purchased (sadly - and before I found this forum to test and verify) that just didn't deliver. Too many just want to get your email to sell, sell, sell.

I know many people doing SEO that I like and respect, and get results - including myself on my own sites....but to be interviewed by a book is another ball game.

      Again - thanks for sharing.

Hmm..there is no standard answer coz every GURU holds different reputation in IM community. Every now and then you see a new GURU surfacing.
If you're looking for a someone whom you can follow for your SEO tips and tricks, then I'd recommend try following top super affiliates. Knowledge of SEO is of no use if you're not applying it to make money. And top affiliates know HOW to use WHAT kinda knowledge WHERE.

    I personally recommend :

    Alan Gardyne

Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts.

HarryPotHead - I agree with your approach on afffiliates - they have a big picture overview of life on the internet. I appreciate your suggestions of IM's to follow.

iidesu / navelstone - funny you should mention google - as that is who I ultimately recommended the author contact (any why). I figure it would be best for google to explain to the world how they view SEO and their role in it (at least at that moment since it is ever changing.)

    Again - appreciate your input.

Personally I wouldn't put any of the so called "gurus" at the top of my list. In fact, most of the big name seo guru's actually know very little about seo, they are just your run of the mill marketers that happen to release information in regards to seo.

I can guarantee you that there are rarely seen users on this forum that know a whole hell of a lot more than any of the "guru's" out there. Same with seo programs and software, most of these that are launched are launched by people that again know very little about seo, but they knew that there is money to be made in the market so they learn enough to send over a work order to their programmer to get started developing the next great seo program.

Believe nobody and take no hostages!

If you are really serious about SEO then I highly recommend you take a look at the stuff by stompernet. All the information I read from the training series has a very high quality information and they are all white hat. I can assure you, if you apply the tricks over there they are still applicable and can bring you long-term success.

The guy I will go for here is Brad Callen, I personally respect him but don't forget that SEO is an art not a science so mastering the basics and doing it pretty well is all it takes and that's the reason SEO is pretty much the easiest way to generate affiliate commissions

Just another perspective. The title of this thread states "best SEO expert" not internet marketer. None of the names mentioned in this thread come even close to being the top SEO expert. The best ones run their own SEO agencies EXCLUSIVELY and don't dabble much with internet marketers.

I rather suggest you to "read, test, read again, test again, throw in your own ideas, test again and become guru"

Since a lot of the stuff being published by the Gurus is mostly "half true". Nobody wants to reveal all the secrets to the public. For example when the guru says that he got this result with 2 tiers, he actually did 5 etc.

Great input everyone - Thanks for taking the time to respond. I guess that's what makes seo interesting - everyone has their own formula / favorite tools.

It should be interesting to see how the author handles this topic in his book.....Have a productive week

SEO is not a science that you can solve with couple of mathematical equations and formulas, it's more like an art, you learn new stuffs every new day and they is no perfect solution that will last years after years so you should also prepare to unlearn some of the stuffs you've learned.

I have to disagree here. Just because you learn new things every day and it's constantly changing and evolving, doesn't mean that it's not a science, per se. SEO and search engines themselves are essentially just a bunch of complex math - an algorithm in and of itself is a purely mathematical and logical device, which is what the SE's use to rank pages. Google's PageRank is simply a convergence of probabilistic Markov chains.

for the fun of it why not just hold a competition for 1 keyword...

Then results would be based on whose site rank top.

Some keyword analysis, competitor analysis, on-site & off-site optimization .... all of us are doing almost the same thing & telling that there are no SEO experts...it's really shame. If you're involved in SEO, then to update yourself you must be following some blogs. So at least why don't you add those sites SEO expert name here.

It's quite casual to say that there's no SEO experts....everyone is following trial & error. I can proudly say that there are many SEO experts around the world......even I've got the opportunity to work with few top class SEO Experts & have learned amazing techniques from them.

I must add the names like Rand Fishkin, Tom Critchlow, Danny Sullivan. Follow the top top SEO experts..... the biggest advantage you'll get is you'll not have to be bother about the ranking of your clients after every Google algo updates.

Amenwolf - GREAT idea - would be very interesting to have an "SEO-OFF" for a key word - perhaps an annual competition just to keep it fresh

The best you mean? The best don't promote themselves. If you herd their name, you probably wouldn't even know them. The only way you would hear about them would be if they did a product launch but it's not worth their time.
