After latest panda update - should I create more unique content or do more backlinking

Hey guys. I'm looking for a little advice here on which way I should go. I am trying to rank my website for it's main keyword and am currently stuck at position 15 where I've been for the past 1+ months. Any link building I do doesn't seem to move it so I was thinking of adding more content since Google loves content.

The site currently only has 5 reviews of products in the niche on it and each review is only around 500 words.

I was thinking of outsourcing 5 more reviews at 1000 words each and dripping them in ever couple days and also outsourcing about 10 general niche specific informational articles at about 500 words each too and dripping them in every couple days too so basically I would be drip feeding unique articles every day for about 1 month to the site.

So what I'm asking is do you think this would be a better way to go for the money or should I put the money into backlinking instead and just keep trying to rank? Thanks in advance for any feedback

The short answer to the question in your subject line is:

      Do Both.

Build links to both your home page and inner content pages, from a variety of sources, using a variety of anchor text (including 'click here').

Continue adding content over time as appropriate, then start building some of your links to the new content.

This is a great point John. Using different anchor text including click here is often ignored. Almost all of my clients think that using their anchor text 100% of the time works well. This is not natural and not how normal users would share a link. I think using no anchor text and click here and very important.

I would suggest you create more unique content at the same time back linking the home page and internal pages. The key is to mix up the link building with various links. Social links are big nowadays with Google and give a nice boost. Linkwheels have been proven to stand the test of 'Google updates'. You can read about that from SEO experts... check out Jeremy Shoemaker talk about link wheels.

Ad more content which is relevant and link back to the home page with the keyword in the anchor text. Try to put the anchor text at the top of the page. Try deep linking to those pages, as well as backlinking to the home page with heavier anchor text. If you can only build backlinks which are relevant and have authority. Business.com, and Yahoo.com are both PR 5 sites that you can list your site in their directory. They allow you to use your keyword as the anchor text. This will give you a good boost. Also BBB.org is a PR 7 backlink. I know they are $300+ for the year but they are definitely worth it.

    Best of luck.

As posted above, you need to do both. The more content you have, the more links you can build and the better the content, the more aggressive you can be when linking.

Something to consider: The number of links to interior pages compared to number of links to your homepage is called the "deep linking ratio".

I find it best that if you have a smaller site, let's say 25 pages or less, your deep linking ratio should be about 25-35% of links go to interior pages, with 65-75% (or more) of the links to your homepage.

As you get more and more interior pages on your site, your deep linking ratio should increase. Once you start having hundreds of pages or more, your deep linking ratio should be reversed, with 65-75% of your links pointing to interior pages, with about 25-35% of your links pointing to your home page.

This isn't an exact measurement, only a guideline. But it is an important concept to understand. The more pages a site has, the higher the percentage of links should go to interior pages and the fewer pages a site has, a higher percentage should point to the homepage.

Thanks for the great points. I think I will start with adding more content. I see after the latest updates that the site currently in the number 1 spot is one that has 9 products reviewed and each review is 1000+ words in length and they have 1 backlink so if I match this and add backlinks I should be able to take them out

Also, don't forget to optimize your interior pages as well (both on page and off).
If you rank those pages, you'll get some google love for your domain as well.

from my exprience, post panda off page content become more important, so:
-Add some unique article well writen at least +-600 word or more word with LSI.
-Steady link velocity, 15 link day are more better than 10k link bomb in one day.
-Link source diversity, don't just rely from one type of link source.
-incontent link are better, blog network, article marketing, homepage backlink
-Link age are matter now !
-make sure variety your text anchor into three:exact anchor text: ipad, url= http:ipad.com, untargeteted anchor text:click here, more information . I don't know but post panda using only one keyword for my keyword make my keyword stuck.
-don't forget social network also work , google + ,facebook like, Tweet.
    -submit video .
-press release also work very effective.
-build both low quality and also good quality link. Why? because if all of your link is high quality google think you buy those link. If you build only crappy link google think you are spammer.

I would do both, however, with only the relatively small number of pages on your site now, I would concentrate on new content first, so as not to appear a "thin" affiliate site in Google's eyes. It would also help you rank for more, related keywords in the SERPS.

Make sure you get plenty of social bookmark action as Google is considering this these days. To do this, look at what kinds of articles and posts are getting strong, social media action in your niche and post articles in the same vein.

You can also try to harness the power of influential social media users, by commenting on their posts and linking to their content from high quality content of your own. If your content is insightful and well written, you could get a nice bit of social media love from them as well. It takes only a little of this to really make your site take off.
