How to Start Content Portal - Should I invest in a theme?

Hey Guys
I'm looking to kick start my own content portal in a few weeks from now. We have about 150 articles ready for posting (all unique, and edited, with images)
Our first goal is to accumulate traffic.
That said, does it make sense to accumulate traffic via a free and simple WP blog theme, and then change the theme to "beautify" once the traffic has been met?
Else, does it make sense to invest in a good theme before we launch in the first place?
Does changing the Wordpress theme have any heavy bearing on SEO rankings of the site?
This is because we've already got the articles written and are looking to get the publishing and SEO work started ASAP. We do not want design and layout etc to be a constraint before we reach our first milestone of accumulating traffic. Once the traffic goals have been reached, we would be in a better position to invest more time and effort into a custom designed theme and website for the portal.
