Hi jcdmp,

This is the nature of a blog. The more often you update it the more often you will see the rankings fluctuate. Rankings change because the content changes.

What is happening is that when you add new content that content gets indexed and Google will apply QDF to the fresh content. When this temporary boost wears off your page then sinks to it's current earned position.

No, the "Google Dance" is a term coined to denote a change within Google's system that causes a shift in rankings. If the change in rankings is due to a webmaster changing or adding content then it technically is not the "Google Dance". In this particular case it seems to be the normal fluctuation we should all expect to see from QDF, the freshness factor.

Sorry, if this sounds silly, but what is QDF? I haven't heard about this term before, could you elaborate?

Hi ASHLEY999,

QDF is the term Google uses for their freshness factor. It is an initialism for the term: Query Deserves Freshness. It is a well known factor in SERP ranking that was first officially revealed by Google Scientist Amit Singhal in a New York Times article back in June of 2007. Google engineer Matt Cutts also confirmed the existence of QDF on the official Google Webmaster Help Youtube channel:

I think I have experienced this on my site. In March I published a post on my website and it shot up the ranks to the 4th position in the local SERPs and to the top of the 2nd page on google .com. The post appeared in Google news as well, and my site was only 2 months old at the time.

But strangely, the post has not lost rank and I have not backlinked the post either. When Matt Cutts mentions "some" posts are given this QDF benefit I think I understand one element that helps in this regard - the post contained the word "innovative" in the title and it was 120% unique

I don't think now google dancing is working.Before 1 year it was working,Now google algorithm has changed.I fully agree with you.

I agree with a previous poster. Updating content will affect SERP's results for sure. I am not implying to always try to keep the same content. Algo's change constantly. You're just on the wrong side of the fence right now.

I have a few more Blogs and they did fluctuate but nothing like this...to 1st page nº4 to page 460+....never saw nothing like this...on all my Blogs they actually "dance"..but not this kind of dance...and the link strategy didnt differ from the rest

the most wierd part is that this Blog was the one bringing money!!!

Hi jcdmp,

The range of fluctuation you will see, due to QDF, varies based on the amount and strength of competition. The greater the competition the larger the swing in rankings will be.

Again, nothing weird here, just the type of ranking fluctuation one should expect to see for a more competitive keyword.

I have lots of sites that fluctuate like that, from page 1 to page 50-80. 2 of them came back no.2 and others still dancing, so I guess it's pretty normal.

One way to help lessen the period that a site dnaces is by getting high PR backlinks. Low quality links is the main reason why a site dances for a long time.

im removing the most recent posts and will let it stay now...how often u guys think i should update the content?

some ppl say that if u dont update the content u will not rank well...if i do update my ranking will fluctuate like this!...not sure what i should do!

the question is how often should i update?

Yep...i have a few that goes to 1st page to +- 100...never like this one...page 460+...lol

i will not update any content and see what happens meanwhile...i have other Blogs that got updated daily and only fluctuate inside page one
