What's up with Google?

Maybe I'm late to the party here but has there been another google update?
I've been working on my new website for just a little over a month now and haven't done too many backlinks for it as of yet, but for some reason my website is now page rank 3? and all of my competition has gone from PR 0 to PR 2?

and not only that but my older websites are moving up and down the rankings again which is pretty weird.
don't know where to be happy or annoyed
but is anyone else experiencing this??

There have been 3 updates that I'm aware of the past month or so

On the MOST recent one, 2 of my 4 month old PR 0 sites jumped up to PR 4 - so i'm pretty happy about that

Not exactly sure what Google is up to. However, I definitely like more frequent updates. I know PR isn't the be-all-end all, but it's nice to know where things stand.

  Yeah the PR doesn't really affect your sites though, it just lets you know what your PR is that's all. It might scare off a few people from trying to compete with you though
  
  I also had a few very new sites go from PR0 - 3, but they are still on the bottom of the first page for rankings. I will have to drop a few more links to get them to the top
