Backlink from Google?

I was doing some spying on some sites today and came across a really horrid site with bad content, nothing updated for what looks like years, keyword not in domain name, etc., but it had a PR 5. Then I see only 10 external links.....one of them was a link from Google? All other backlinks had PR 2 and 3 and one 10 - Google! How do you get a backlink from Google and was this the reason this dreadful site has a PR 5. Someone enlighten me please!

  • Google directory (dir.google) had PR9 , it might be showing link from that. Backlinks re deceptive. I have seen sites with just few back links outranking sites with hundreds of back links. The quality of links matter more than the quantity.

    • That's what I was thinking...the PR 10 from Google backlink shown in SEO Quake may have been giving them a boost???

    I'm pretty sure Google knows about this and made it so that no PR juice is followed.

    • Link from Google profile page? Most likely worthless. Remember that Google's well aware of the value of a link like this.

      Link naturally from a Google non-profile page? HUGE! I've seen sites that have gotten these kinda links and rank for a ton of things.
