Good Site Trashed In Google Places

I have a small, local site which does very well in the organic listings in Google UK for local searches. However it does badly in the Google Places. So many of my competitors' place-page results are shown that they almost fill the first page of Google, and push my good organic result near the bottom. Their place pages have mostly zero reviews and look pretty much like mine. Is there some trick I am missing? Am I meant to upload unique, high quality content to the place page??

Kind regards
