you need to look at who the competitors are between 1 and 10, see if they're optimized for the keyword, and how many backlinks they have

That's like asking "how fast do I have to run to win a race."

As if there is some magic number.

I don't know why people think that the number of backlinks = #1

      It doesn't.

Google has to love your site more than the others. Give them
      solid reasons.

But they owe you nothing. So the question cannot be answered.

Suppose they have 100 backlinks, but pagerank is pretty decent 2 to 3.

Check quality of backlinks, are they related to the keyword? Do they have EMDs?

You are asking how many backlinks you need? Based on what I learned so far it's not just about quantity but also the quality of your links. I bet you can lord over all those in the top 10 if you can somehow find a way to get 10 homepage anchored links to sites that have PR7 and up. And I guess you can do it with even less. Of course this is just for rich or the really resourceful ones.

Also, don't forget that on-page SEO is still an important factor that helps in ranking. So bottom line is don't just focus on the number of your backlinks. Because Google certainly doesn't.

It really depends on how good and optimized your content is, the strength of your competition, and the quality of your backlinks.

    Basically, it's impossible to say.
