.EDU and .GOV Backlinks Relevant?

Do .edu and .gov backlinks have to be relevant to be considered a "quality" backlink?

For instance, I'm in the sports industry and if I post an educated comment in a health related .gov website regarding that health topic/issue, would this still be relevant or more spammy than an asset?

  • There is no certain answer just guesses based on personal experiences. Why don't you do a case study yourself then you know the correct answer?

    • I really think "related" links do not provide much of an additional benefit. The proof? My site is ranking near the top for very competitive keywords without a single relevant link.

      Just saying..

  • No - don't worry about it. You aren't gonna find relevant EDU and GOV links anyways that allow for links.

Sure maybe you could find one or two, but thats not gonna put a dent in your rankings.

And no, you can't hurt your site by building these links.

    • Yo RevSEO when you gonna make some high PR links, cause you haven't yet..
  • I agree with Yasir and RevSEO. The relevance issue is over stated. A link is a link as far as I can tell.

While he wasn't talking about that particularly, I saw Matt Cutts tell us that they give no more relevance to .gov and .edu links as they do to any others. But people continue to believe that they do.
