Small sites with high PR? How is PR calculated anyway?

I just checked out a site and something about it really puzzled me.
  • The site has around 40 backlinks in total but they come from only 5 external domains - that's not too many backlinks, right? The quality of the external domains is nothing special - two links came from PR1 Blogger blogs and the remaining 3 were some directories / yellow pages.
  • The domain is 5 months old - pretty young.
  • The site has a total of only 25 indexed pages (I think many of them are duplicate).

However, this small, lacking in all aspects site's main page has a PR of 4!

And some of the subpages have a PR of 2 or 3.

How is this possible? :confused::confused::confused:

    PR means how much quality of the content which you have written upon the same web page. If content is unique and fresh in landing pages they deserve to get high PR as compare to index page.

      No, I'm pretty sure pr is a measure of quality and quantity of backlinks.

      What are landing pages and how are they different from the index page?

      On the site in question, the index page has a PR of 4, the rest have a PR of 2-3.
      Content on each page is short, bullet-ed and spun from other sites.

    Chances are you can't see all the backlinks pointing at the site, most likely because yahoo explorer is scaling back this feature to webmasters. Either that, or it's a google fart, and the pr will disappear in another week or so.
