Adsense Optimization Review

Hopefully posting in the right place.

I've got a site getting an average 2K page views a day from about 1K visitors. It's a 'legit' site - original content, outbound links, etc. Monetizing with affilaite links and Adsense, but my Adsense click rate is under .5%.

Looking for some suggestions for anyone willing to offer. Site is ProhormoneDB.com

Thanks-

well, that would be a problem!

90% of the traffic are to view either a supplement or an ingredient, so that's where I've been focusing my efforts.

I see that some of your pages have the ads below the fold.

Ads below the fold are known to get extremely low CTR, so I would move these to the top of the pages if possible.

Other pages have the ads at the top, but aligned right with the main content wrapping around the left.

I would test reversing the layout of these.

I also noticed that your ads are either 250x250, or 300x250, but according to Google and in my own experience, the 336x280 size gets more clicks that any of the other sizes, so if you can make this size work with your theme, I would test it.

Talking about themes. I prefer a 2 column theme when the main monetization model for the blog is AdSense.

The bottom line though, is that you must test different ad sizes and positions and if you can, different theme layouts as well because what works for one site, might not work for another.

Have a look at Google's heat map. It can give you an idea where some of the better CTR locations are. Remember, though, that this is a composite of a whole lot of sites and ads that Google sees. So take it as a starting point and as already said, test things out for yourself.

It would appear that the adsense on the site was just put in at random places; all in the worse places possible according to the heat map that google has laid out.

I am not sure this site should really be using adsense as a choice to make money from. You should be picking an affiliate program that specializes in those supplements.

You even have an amazon "store" located on your website. For the products you are showing this would be a better way than adsense by a long shot.

Another thing you should think about is "Is adsense going to be my main income from this site?" If the answer is no, then just take it out altogether and put something else in its place.

If you WANT the site to make money from adsense then I would suggest an entire site overhaul and recreate the site according to the heatmap created by google themselves.

Thanks to all the suggestions - I've made a few changes and doubled my CTR, though it's still very low. I'll keep tinkering!

Do you currently use section targeting?

It can improve the relevance of your ads and thereby increase your CTR.
