    Hey hustle,
I'm no expert so I maybe wrong but as nobody else has answered here is my reply.
Ranking and difficultly basically depends on the keywords you are going for and the competition there is. If you choose low competition keywords with decent amount of search volume you can get traffic and ranking fairly quickly and easily. (Within days)
As a newbie you may find some of Marcus Campbells videos interesting. (I'm not an affiliate for him, just I've found his free videos useful). I have never bought anything from him, I just watch the free stuff. Google "Simple Sites Big Profits" and sign up.

I don't think there was any intention to mislead - he did state he found the videos useful. Nothing too misleading there.

In reply to the initial post, competition is the key. You want some competition (paid ads on the first page of Google's SERPs), but if you find high PR sites on the first page, that may be too tough a market to crack.

Make sure that you are competitive for the keywords that you have chosen. If you are the traffic will flow, and if not, your efforts may not be rewarded. Write articles and promote your site through low competion keywords.

It all boils down to competition, we live in a relative world, not a vacuum, so it's like asking "how long does it take to climb a hill", well how big is that hill, what is the terrain like, how many other people are climbing the hill, but to answer your question generally speaking you need to build lots of quality backlinks in tandem with quality content to rank high for any decent keyword worth doing so.

I think you always have to have a game plan. The SERP CLIMBER works *wink *wink j/k but link velocity and link diversity are important. You want to build links from quality sites. Most of the time I like to use pyramids to build my sites so that one you are not getting a whole bunch of links pointed at your site which could cause a penalty especially if your site is new.

I'm not sure how new you are to this, but it seems like you're fairly fresh. The easiest way to look at it from the start is by playing the simple supply and demand game. Target a keyword that is getting a lot of searches (demand) but not a lot of sites dedicated to it (supply). This is a pretty relative but there are likely to be some guides out there that can help you through it. It will also become evident as time goes on which keywords are worth your time and which aren't.

Once you have that, then it's SEO, SEO, SEO. First and foremost is to have superb and relevant content on your website. Then there is a plethroa of information regarding where to go from there splattered all over this site and others that go beyond the scope of a single post.

I was lucky enough to have a friend who is a SEO specialist guide me through the process. We make the first page for a fairly competitive keyword in about 3-4 weeks (while working on other projects and holding down jobs).

There are few steps here, first you need to get enough trust rank from authority sites, then you need more link juice (backlinks) to outrank your competitor... lastly, avoid Google's filter at all cost. You can find more information here: How To Improve Website SEO / Search Engine Ranking?
