Would you target a keyword if.....

Found some keywords that have decent exact local searches (5000) and decent CPC (5.00)
and has the EMD available.

Upon reviewing the top 10 comp results I can see a number of sites with high PR and lots of backlinks to the page. However, most of them are not specifically targetting the kw as seen by their domain names, descriptions etc.

So basically, most of them have very weak onpage factors overall.

Would you be inclined to target keywords like this?

Dont really want to be spinning my wheels.

Btw- for what it's worth- traffic travis competition says "relatively easy" for these keywords.

  • anyone have some insight?
  • I would go after it. Good onpage and EMD has a lot of power. I would stress relevant links form trusted sites too.

  • Is it a local service or product? How are the global search results?

    • No not local- global search volume is higher
  • I assume your competition is all Authority sites. I'd try it out and build your site as an authority one as you could grab the EMD. Do very well in on-page SEO factor.

Don't think 5 page mini-site could beat the competition though.

    • Check their link profile and see what kind of links they have to that page. See if those links are highly relevant (exact match anchor text), and whether they are coming from authoritative domains/pages.

I wouldn't worry about PR. That has very little to do with whether you can outrank a page or not (not sure how this myth spread - it's needs to be dispelled, seriously). I have several PR 2-3 pages, outranking page rank 6-7 pages.

The same goes for the number of backlinks. It's not about how many incoming links a site has to a page, but the number of linking root domains. It's better to have 5 links from 5 different sites, than 5 links from 1 site (all other factors equal). So check to see if all their links are coming from only a handful of sites. If that's the case, then it should be relatively easy to outrank them if you diversify.

  • Don't second guess yourself. One thing that sets successful people above the rest is recognizing an opportunity when they see one, and SEIZING it! EMD's can easily be ranked at #1 spots if you know what you're doing. Even if you have moderate/difficult competition. I managed to get one ranked in the UK for a 12,000 exact match kw (UK only has 4,000 searches per month of the 12,000), and I've already hit the $100/day mark with just that ONE domain. Snatch it up before someone else does.

    • wow thats pretty good!

So I went ahead and got the domains anyway - they were too good to pass up- so I am going for it
  • Forgive my naviety - I know what SEO and RP and CPC are but what is EMD?

  • Getting EMDs on KWs with more than 5k exact searches per month are definitely rare now days, snatch this one up! Get some content up, build a diverse quality link profile with that keyword and in no time you will rank for it.
