This board has taught me a lot. I mainly hang here and 2 other places to get questions answered. You see so many people "make it" you just hope to be one of them.

I have goals in what I want to do so I get motivated and try some and then a week later get bummed because of something generally small. Im trying my hand at amazon sites but would you know the first 2 I try to build there may be issues either with the domain name (both are 10 and 13 years old) or something I cant see. These 2 re not getting indexed and all I try points back it seems to the domain name

So im back to square one on should I even bother building sites and stick to my other things (selling domains and my main music site which has dropped in rev as well)

So here are my questions to see what direction I should go from some of the exports out there......and thank you as well!

1. If the domain name is NOT an exact match BUT has at least 1 keyword should I still build it EVEN if the EXACT search rank is 100 searches or less?

2. Can you still have success with a non emd domain and a low search count keyword?

3. If I build an amazon store and spin the product description will google still see this as dup content perhaps based on the URL of that product item?

4. With out PPC or any other "paid" search help, how soon generally should I see good traffic considering the site will have weekly content added and again going on the basis of a search count of 100 or less a month?

I know the days of build it and they will come are over BUT if I do build a site say on a domain like Belpppooeee.com and I want to rank for Apple IPhones, As long as my content, articles, products and on page seo are matched for this item and keywords can I still perform well with others who may have the EMD of the keyword im trying to rank for?

The more I think about it the more of a losing battle it seems BUT obviously there are some who are doing it im just not sure how?????

If your domains are that old and they are not indexed, then pehaps it is their history that is preventing them from being indexed.

EMD's can give you a little bump in the search engines, but they are not neccessary to get your sites ranked. I don't know of any reason why you couldn't do well with a domain that has nothing to do with what you are selling. Providing that you have a good site, decent content, a big enough site and some backlinks.

Sometimes though even when you do everything right, your site won't rank and then it is time to move onto aanother project.

My 12 year son has an amazon affiliate site selling skateboards and gear. The domain name is not keyword based, in fact it's called after his own name and without changing any of the content that is pulled in from amazon, he gets about a hundred visitors a day just from the long (very long) tail key phrases that often rank in the top 5 in google.

The site is about 4 months old and is now starting to make some money from him. He's 12, doesn't understand SEO, keywords or any of that, but he sure loves to pack his store with all the cool stuff he'd like to buy for himself!

Google seems to like his site, and there's nothing unique about it at all. I don't know if this is an anomaly or not but it's how one kid is doing it!

Having a domain that's an exact match will give you a better head start in SEO terms. However is certainly isn't essential, a few extra backlinks will soon compensate for that.

As JMichael said it could be something to do with the history of the domains.

One thing I would say is that you mentioned abandoning project and focusing on selling domains and your your music site again..

I used to jump from one money making method to the next, only to never see them through and waste more of my precious time!

FOCUS on one goal at a time, try not to get distracted and the building blocks will slowly come together

Amazon related sites should be some of the easiest to rank for. Just invest some money in good backlinks on homepages of high pr blogs/sites and you'll be on the first page of google in no time. Plenty of people offer high pr homepage linking packages on this forum.

I can totally understand you frustrations. It can take weeks or months, sometimes a year or more to build a really successful income from a website.

Personally my experience has been to have one main keyword in the domain. Keep it short, 3 words or less.

    Then focus on...

    1. building quality content on the website that other webmasters will want to link to.

    2. Do some basic linkbuilding campaigns.

    3. Consistently improve the site

    4. Consistently market the site - i.e. article marketing, emails, guest blog posts

I have had excellent success with one site that only has 10 pages. I rarely update the content. But it has pages that go into depth about a topic in an ehow.com or wiki style. So many other websites link to these pages because it has strong informational value.

Of course they are also monetized.

A domain name doesn't have to be keyword-based. This is my favorite humor blog; cakewrecks.com

It's hugely popular, won all sorts of awards, it broke every rule in the book; for starters, it's not even hosted on her own site. She used to use blogspot now she uses something called square space but either way it's not hers. The words are shorter than most twitter posts and definitely not Seo optimized, she uses lots of pictures with tags that aren't even SEO optimized, and somehow when you search for 'cake' she still shows up on the front page. She's not even selling cakes. She also does no advertising.

However she does make a lot of money from her advertising and she just recently wrote a book based on her blog. I've followed this blog long before it became popular and I watched it grow from this lady's hobby to real business with an assistant everything. She follows none of the rules and yet she's still wildly successful.

    Keywords aren't everything.

BTW, if you're in need of a good laugh check out the site it's a riot.
