Regardless of what keywords I'm researching I almost always stumble across the CPC for my keyword + definition and it is almost always $3+

Anyone have any idea why the CPC is so high when all people are looking for is the meaning of the word?

CPC is 'cost per click - this is what each advertiser pays when someone clicks. So if the CPC is $5.00, You click on my ad for 'dog boarding,' then I pay Google $5.00 for that search. There is no 'guarantee' from Google that you get a sale from that interaction.
