I know when you add new content to a site, it isn't known by the search engines until that search engine's bot crawls the site, but is that what also recognizes backlinks?

I'm asking because I should have WAY more, but my site is only 26 days old, should I be seeing them fairly quickly or am I being impatient?

  • Well, it depends... 26 days is very new for a site and links. The main problem is - how are you checking for backlink? Most tools don't give you the full link graph of your site and every tool gives different data.

    • I use site explorer, but I have the free version of scrape box, every time I out source backlinking I check them all, and pretty much all of em register.

      Yes, I do keep checking them, just the few tests I ran with the software says I should have at least double what site explorer is showing. And most of the links were built over a week ago.

      Am I being impatient?
  • Your question wasn't quite clear, but if you are saying that you put up some content and then ran out and got some backlinks to that content (i.e. did some blog commenting, paid someone on fiverr to do a scrapebox run, got a bunch of forum profile links published, etc) and you are waiting to see those links show up....well....welcome to the new hell that everyone seems to be going through.

    Getting the pages your backlinks are on crawled is very different from getting them INDEXED. They don't count unless they are Indexed. This is why tools like Linklicious and BacklinksIndexer have been brought to the market.

    Basically, the school of thought is that Google will often overlook profile links and such because it's just a page with a link on it. Nothing important enough to index the page. You COULD bolt a mini-signature to every profile with your link in it, and that would help, but who knows? Also, the cost of getting profiles done up with spun sigs would increase the price a bit. The second idea which seems to work is to build a bunch of backlinks to these content-free pages. The idea being that you can "trick" google into thinking that the page is at least important enough to index, regardless of the lack of content, because there are a lot of links pointing to that profile page with a single link to your money site.

    These tools seem to be working to one degree or another.

    It's important to remember not to get too caught up in this though. It's well known that Google and Yahoo never show all of the links they know about. This helps protect their algorithm in some way. So they may have indexed your link and not be showing it in their backlink list. If that's the case, you'll waste your time looking for it to show because it's hidden. The solution is that you can safely assume that as long as the PAGE with the link on it is Indexed....the backlink is indexed as well.

    • I apologize if my question wasn't clear, but you managed to answer it. :p

      As of right now, site explorer is showing over 200 backlinks, all of my manual sweat and tears backlinks. I out sourced 100 backlinks about a week ago, they all show up in scrapebox, but not on site explorer.

      The 100 backlinks should have been built on indexed sites, but I will make sure so I'm not waiting for Santa Clause.

    • This isn't entirely true, and I have case studies to support this.

      Although being crawled is DIFFERENT than being indexed...being indexed isn't the only thing that counts. We did a case study where we ranked #1 for multiple keywords without a SINGLE indexed backlink...using only crawled backlinks.

      This is just a MYTH and missinformation that is going around.

      Look to the SERPs, not the index numbers. Those numbers are constantly in flux as google changes what is in the index. However, SERPs are the ultimate goal so you can get people to your sites and make some money.

      If we wanted we could build an indexing service that just killed it. But I don't believe in that type of service at all - it's just smoke and mirrors that some people get hung up on instead of figuring out why their sites aren't ranking.

      Indexing is a function of backlinks to the page, page content, page age, domain, and who knows what else.

      That said, Linklicious will help your indexing some. We just don't want to preach it because in our tests it doesn't cost justify.

    It's possible that it's still to early for Yahoo to have crawled those backlinks and for them to be showing up in Site Explorer.

    One more thing that might help is to setup a Google Webmaster account so you can see the backlink count that Google has for your site.

    Also, there are third party sites like SeoMoz, MajesticSEO, Ahrefs, and others that will give you backlink count numbers (many times for free) that you can check to see if the backlinks show up there.

    However, depending on the type of backlinks you are getting, those pages themselves may have to be indexed first. If you're getting backlinks from pages already in the Google index, it's just a matter of waiting for the page to be re-crawled.

  • Open Site Explorer, Yahoo Site Explorer and Majestic SEO all are different platforms for showing backlinks and they will not show all of the backlinks you have built. Probably not even 1/10th of them. Don't worry so much about backlink count unless you are comparing yourself to a competitor, care more about SERP results.
