Google PR and traffic

I think Google Page Rank has nothing to do with traffic. I update my site daily, I made the site SEO friendly and I manually submited to more than 1000 web directories. This helped me to get Google Page Rank 4 and to be number one on google.com for headlines aggregator keywords. But the traffic didn't increase. Can you help me to understand why?
I forgot to mention, my domain is young, it is 6 months old, and I know Google loves the older domain.

  • For the past 3 years PR has been on the wane and it is now barely relevant in the slightest.

    • Agreed. Having links on high PR sites can increase your rankings, ultimately increasing your traffic but it's really irrelevant in terms of what your site is ranked especially with little traffic.
    • Your PR doesn't really matter, it is your ranking in Google. If you traffic didn't increase, you are probably not ranking higher on search terms people look for.

You can see an article I wrote about that subject:

  • My friend you missed a very important point. Your keyword has absolutely no searches. You can check it with google keyword tool. If nobody searches for that term than you wont get traffic from that keyword.

Try to rank for "news aggregator" for example. this one has 3600 exact searches per month while your keyword "headlines aggregator" has exactly 0. (this would be possibly a bit to competitive for you to rank for but just so you get an understanding of what i mean)

And from pagerank you wont get any traffic either (besides linkjuice), you may have your posts listed quicker and rank easier but to get traffic you need to do your keyword research well before you start working to rank for nonsense keywords.

I recomend you to to learn a bit about google keyword tool and keyword research in general. There is tons of FREE information about this topic.

    Good Luck !

Now I checked and you're right. My keywords doesn't help me. I have to make some changes. Thank you for advice.

For "news aggregator" my site is on the page no. 8 on google. It's not so bad, but I know, there is a lot of work to increase the rank after these keywords.
  • PR doesn't mean you should have high traffic. Your site just has high rank in Google. But the visitors don't even see this ranking while searching in Google. You should optimize your site on keywords that people are interested in an keywords that have high "exact search". You'd better use Google keyword tool

You're right. But a high PR help you to be up in search and this means more traffic. Am I wrong?
    • Thanks for this

I'll try google keyword tool too
  • If you are number one on the search engines, and the traffic doesn't increase, could it be that you just have some sort of personalized search going on, and that you're actually not number one? That happened to me, once, I got all happy I was number one... then realized my search was personalized :-)

    • No it has nothing to do with it it is just that his keyword that ranks one has no searches at all. you could rank for the term "qwdjutrolikopus" on one but that wouldn´t get you traffic becuase no one searches for it.

    • OMG. That SO happened to me. I was feeling on top of the world until I realized that I hadn't signed out of my gmail, which caused me to immediately drop. Then I went to hidemyass.com and I found out that some of my other keywords weren't so hot either. Very depressing.
  • High PR doesn't mean you should have high traffic. For getting the high traffic to your site you need to rank high for the high search volume keywords and not rank high for the keywords that has very less search volume. This type of keywords will not drive any traffic even if you are on #1 for that keyword.
  • Yes you are right! Google PR has nothing to do with traffic towards a website. The reason is PR is just a numeric weight given to a webpage depending on the number of backlinks (its quality) and etc. The pagerank algorithm says this only. You may be ranking on top with one or two keywords but you PR may not be even 1.
  • High PR and relevent keywords and page can help increase traffic. If not, check your keyword proper or not or if it has good rank.
  • For low competition keywords a PR of 2-3 will usually have you up there. For higher competition keywords you would want at least a 5 to be on the first page. However, PR isn't everything. Relevance is the most important - so ensure all on page SEO factors are looked after and then drive links at the page.

Google PR shows the popularity of your site and it doesn't mean that if you have good PR then your site get too many traffic and if your site have too many traffic then you can get the high PR. You PR and traffic depend on the quality and fresh contents.

In my opinion popularity means traffic not high PR. Still I don't know exactly what high PR means or how a high PR can help to increase traffic.

  • Google is distributing PR to any site as i have seen in last few month. Getting traffic is still crucial and we have to work hard for this.
  • Your sites PR isn't that important, it's all about getting links on other sites with page rank that matters most, this is how we can shoot a site from nowhere to the top of page 1 in weeks.
  • If you are one of the search engine traffic does not increase, this may be you just have some ongoing personalized search, you is not really number one? This happened to me, once, I am glad I was number one ... then realized that my search is personalized :-)

I didn't personalize the search, but probably, as other warrior wrote, my keywords after I'm top rated, aren't so important.
  • Have checked the search results of that keywords for that you are on top ?
It all happening because of search results . Use google adwords tool to know the search results
  • Hi,

I could understand you and your work.

Just i wanna say that i have studied in many article and blogs that doing SEO for a site in continues also wont give proper result in Google. It should have breaking time as we have in our life.

  • PR does not matter about good traffic. you can make PR thru back links but traffic. suggestion go for social media and video promotion. yes, what about your keywords ? you said you are no 1 ?? what's the search volume for your targeted keywords?
  • Google only calculates the High PR Quality sites and don't consider the PR it is useless. To get more traffic try to share your latest news on social netwotking and bookmarking sites to get more traffic and subscribers.
  • IF your not getting traffic even though ranking on first page on Google means you are not targeting the right keyword. I think you need to do keyword research once again to your site to find out the right keyword which has high search volume.
  • Nice post..i think, having huge low PR backlinks increases PR but doesent really help in SEPR..to get better position in SEPR , high quality PR backlinks are important

This could be an other explanation. I have many backlinks from low PR web directories. So, I have to focus on high PR backlinks.

I followed your advice. After some analyze in Google keyords tool I made few changes in my site and the results apear step by step.
    Thank you all!
  • ranking doesnt mean that you should have high traffic, take a look on your keyword
  • According to me page rank never effect your traffice. in the past time google page rank had impotance but at present people have no time to view your page rank as it only shows your site reputation in google

    • If PR were useless, it wouldn't be there. If it didn't matter, then the 140k links I have would propel me to the #1 spot with no problem because I have a ton of anchored text links, but a lot of them are from sites without PR.

So obviously, PR matters. It only matters for traffic if the PR gets you links for search terms where traffic happens.

I get a ton of traffic, but I need more conversion. Higher rankings will help for new traffic to convert.
  • People should read the post that where written before they just post the same nonsense answer again and again.
  • as long as i have traffic..the rest does not bother me much...haha
  • Keyword research is the first and most important part in generating traffic, and long tail keywords is my favorite strategy to it.
  • yes, yes, exactly. this is what i want to say.
  • if you have your backlinks in high pr and quality website then your site get a good PR
  • don`t pay attention for PR. Google has some statistics which shows which words people uses often so they can bring trafic to your site - just type in google "google insight for search" - straight from google ;-)
