If all your competitiors are updating their blogs only once every two months, then it's perhaps ok. But if they're all updating their blogs twice a month, it's not so clever.

You see what I mean, perhaps? You're asking about this with reference to Google, i.e. from an SEO perspective ... so it's comparative, and depends on what other people are doing. You have to analyse the quality (more than the quantity) of your immediate competitors' SEO efforts to judge the answer to these questions: nobody can answer them "in abstract".

I would first ask, is your blog on the first page of Google for the keywords you are promoting? If the answer, is no, then one article is NOT enough.

If yes, where are you on page one? If, hypothetically you are number ten, then again, how often do the websites from 1 - 9 add fresh content?

Before anyone else comments, I'm fully aware that there are many more factors in your position on Google than writing articles, but it's articles you asked the question about.

And as Alexa pointed out, these days, quality is a huge factor in the equation as well.

I agree with Alexa. You need to analyze your key competitors and see how many times they are updating their site and then it would be helpful for you to decide. My suggestion is try to post atleast 1 post per week or 4 per month.

It really depends on your goals - over the long-term, well written, robust articles deployed monthly will serve you better than one poorly written article a day.

As Alexa said, what is your competition doing? How are their articles and content ranking?

One of my clients personally wants his blog to be updated daily with a 1000+ word post! So for me, once a month seems scarce.

P.S. My client ranks #1 for many top KWs in his niche even though he has an exit popup on his homepage. My take on that? The frequently updated content does have something to do with his rankings!

As it has already been pointed out, it depends on your niche. If it's a very competitive niche, it might be wise to do more than one a month.

What I'd recommend, however, is that you don't use a blog if you want to publish 1 article a month.

Instead build a themed site, have several pages on your website. This way you build a rich mini-encyclopedia.

A blog with 1 post a month looks abandoned (just like mine at the moment ). A website with a content base that slowly grows is valuable for everybody who stumbles upon it.

Don't believe me? Google themselves say in one of their Google Analytics videos that blogs usually have a high bounce rate. People read the latest blog post and leave.

It's not enough, not with competitors using auto post robot plugins and news aggregators. I am new to all this just like you, and it's one heck of a learning curve, but enjoyable. Quality articles are probably the best bet, and as some earlier replies said, it's not always quantity but QUALITY and making sure those keywords are peppered nicely thoughout your content - in a natural way: don't ever spam your own content with too many keywords. Google is intelligence on Steroids!
I would do once every 3 days, and see what happens over 30 days.
    Good luck

Thanks for the reply. Well, since my niche are product based, most of them will be ecommence sites such as Amazon.com or eBay.com...I do see thin sites on first page too.

So I am thinking of adding at least 2 high quality articles a month or once a fortnight.

I agree with Alexa, and also that it depends on the quality of content that you generate. Sometimes, writing one QUALITY 1000-words article is always better than two crap 500-words article.

Moreover, if you are mainly doing news articles, you gotta do almost a dozen each day or more. You see, it depends on your project mainly!

For an established site, 1 a month is ok as long as its backed up with regular shorter posts.
For a new site, you need at least 2 a week and the regular posts.

I personally feel consistency is the key and then you need to track whether your rankings are rising. If you are posting one per month and your reports show that your ranking is rising for your site then that's good option, if not you need to speed things up and then track again. It all depends upon your niche, testing that you do and what your competitors ranking above you are doing.

for blogging, two articles a month is healthy but for syndication, one article is good as long as you make it indexed first before syndicating.

I think it's a matter of establishing your plan of action.

You mentioned that you see "thin" sites ranking well in your niche.
If so, this would be a good opportunity to cream them with unique and well-written regular content.

As for how regular, I would have thought once of twice a month and them monitor the progress, and up it from there if need be.

    I wish you well.

If you do not update your blog regularly you will lose the attention of the search engines and also your subscribers will probably opt-out as well. Write posts and articles in advance and schedule them so that your viewers are trickle-fed a regular stream of updates and information from you. Keep it atleast a minimum of 2-3 posts a month!

Because blogging is a very interactive medium I am going to agree with everyone else and say that at least twice a month is preferable, but whatever you do, make it regular.

It also depends on the type of niche your website falls in. If its a niche that requires new posts and updates all the time then i guess you need to update your pages more often. From a SEO perspective I would increase and update my pages on a weekly basis to keep my content fresh.

The quantity of articles you’ll post is not as important as the quality of your posts.

If you can write interesting articles and give good information to your readers, it’s a good idea to frequently update your blogs. Otherwise, post less content, but content that will be really substantial. You should write long articles with a lot of information. They attract many readers. Don’t waste your time writing a few empty words, and hoping to get attention.

The amount of blog post you make is going to depend on your mode of earning income.

If your blog is doing well as you wish and your readers don't need to be fed with content as your site contains virtually all the necessary info then one article a month is not bad. But if you are trying to get on the SERP and you are still below, then you need to wake up.

I'd say do it 2-3 times a month. People come for content and if your site doesn't get any new content all month, that kind of turns people away. I would do at most 4 a month, and at least 2 a month.

You reply captures the very essence of blogging.

We IM types only see the money! People come to your blog to get info, good quality stuff and they constantly want fresh content or else they'll go elsewhere.

So high quality fresh content always to retain the old and bring in new ones.

For starting up, I would say that once a month article would might not be enough, Specially if you have competitions that are doing it on a weekly basis. It may all boil down to Quality however if the span of time your subscribers reads articles, you might loose their interest in between. I'd go for a weekly updates with good quality content. Just my two cents. :-)

I believe that it will be enough. As far as I know, google loves constant updates for sites. You can update your blog once a day, once a week, once a month, as long as it's constant updates, then it will be enough.

Once a month posting period will also gives you more times to do keyword research, gives you less thing to think about (create 12 posts at a time and make it one year worth of content, then forget it), and gives enough times for you to pre sell your list to read your blog post (high comment count on each post are important for social proof, no?).

Don't focus too much on numbers and "keyword density" and other shenanigans. Note there are sites which rank extremely well with only a few articles.

That being said, yes have a RICH site with good, longer articles (800ish words)..which provides value for the users. One/month is plenty if you follow this, IMO.

I honestly believe that at the end of the day, less high-quality articles, full of relevant content, written for the benefit of the reader, will always rise to top above a larger volume of short articles, stuffed full of keywords, with very little readable content.

You must post at least 3 articles every week on your blog... this improves the frequency of your blog cache by Google spider.. Google consider blog to be a daily diary which must update frequently and Google knows this very well.

One article a month is not very much, but would work with some very small niches. However, in more competitive niches you need closer to 1 article a day to your blog. Think about it this way......the more posts you have on your blog the more nets you have out there to help you catch the fish you are after. If you have just 10 posts you only have 10 posts to bring in traffic, but if you have 1,000 posts you have quite a bit more to bring you in traffic.

I would recommend at least 1 post per day for competitive niches and maybe 2-3 posts per week for not as competitive niches.

Try thinking of your blog in terms of a news site, which it is in a way. You know you will lose interest if you keep going back and seeing the same thing week after week.

If you are taking the monthly magazine approach, you are probably losing a vast amount of revenue possibilities. The more articles and fresh information the better experience for your readers and it shows you too have an interest in your niche.

On the other hand, sometimes I write a post and the traffic tells me to leave it up. In other words, some posts are hot and you want to either leave it up a while or write more content on that specific topic.

For instance, I have a floor tile and remodeling blog site and I posted a story and warning on danger of Travertine Tile in a shower and how it can attract black mold. The traffic was really great so I left it up until it slowed and I wrote a new post. This site is really for customer consumption and it is not optimized for revenue but this has been my experience.

For SEO purposes, I don't think it's really going to matter how often you add content to your blog after a certain point. You want enough pages to rank for enough terms to get a decent amount of traffic, but past that it's not too important. You're helping bolster your internal link structure and rank for new keywords, which will obviously increase traffic, but mainly because of breadth of content and not any direct SEO benefit (sans the internal links.)

That said, users may forget about or stop following your blog if you update it infrequently. Look at Maddox's website, for example. He's been losing a significant amount of traffic over the past few years due to infrequent updates, but he puts up content maybe two or three times a year at this point, which is much different than once a month.

Also, if you're only going to post once a month, you better make sure those posts are worth it. Your readers are going to need to enjoy what you're throwing up there.

I guess the main reason why you should have a blog is that you are posting lots of content on it very consistently.

Also, I would suggest writing really long posts with interesting content. That will increase the time visitors spend on your site, decrease bounce rate and positively increase rankings.
