Well... for small websites, i use Social bookmarks, article submissions and high pr blog comments.

For one of my semi-competitive keywords (9000 exact match searches) buying homepage backlinks did the trick.

Patients is where it's at! Article submissions have proven themselves and strongly encourage to keep these going along with blog commenting

    Agree with trytolearnmore.

For smaller sites with easier competition you don't really need to do anything too advanced. If you're targeting a competitve niche, you'll need to step it up. HPB networks seem to help, as does getting creative with different link tiers.

Patience is definitely the best method (if you could call it a method ). If you are looking for it to happen quickly, you may get disappointed quickly.

I used all of the methods you have described, did it for 3 months, and am now ranking #1 for multiple keywords and top 10 for others in a medium competition niche.

I've had great success (even through all of Google's updates) with article distribution. I'm able to achieve a high number of quality links on a consistent basis. As those links are indexed, rankings rise.

You need to consider not just where you're getting your links, but how many, how often and whether they're indexed.

Out of your suggestions, article marketing and press release submission. Go for contextual anchored links from high PR pages that are preferably within relevant content high up on the page...

Focus on getting high-quality links from high-quality websites. Guest posting is still an excellent way to generate high-quality incoming links. If possible, try to wrap links in important keywords. For example, as an SEO Specialist, a link around “SEO specialist” would be more effective than a link wrapped around my name.

According to my experience so far blog and forum commenting, article, press release and directory submissions gives back good and quality backlinks. If its just about getting backlinks then just use a goof name to make the comments and post quality and reasonable comments.

all of the above + run (and advertise) contests, free product giveaways and get links through "worth of mouth" on such deals, guest blogging (relevant blogs only), 301 redirects (not 302) to pass link juice, attract journalists by writing about non-commercial topics (make them related to your niche somehow), offline link building works well too - network at conferences, talk about your blog with friends and friends of friends, etc etc.

the highest power links are those from a site on a similar or related topic which is a trusted authority and voluntarily given.

Eric Ward talks a lot about this and proves it many times by ranking number one with many fewer links than the competitors. You can check out some of his articles here Link Building Columns and Posts from Eric Ward

One example he often talks about is sites where someone has curated a set of links on a subject because they are very interested or involved in this subject. Many of these sites are not commercialized and he mentioned he often finds them on pages 4-5-6 of searches (where nobody else looks). To Google these type of researched links are super excellent. You usually have to contact the site owner and ask for a link, assuming you have a good resource for it.

Getting bloggers in your niche to write about you is very good if you can make it happen.

Links from relevant industry associations are good and build credibility.

As far as links that can be more easy to get right now guest blogging on topic related blogs is excellent.

Personally I think forum posting in your niche an social bookmarking are very useful too. I am ambiguous in blog commenting. I think only high PR posts are worth comments and preferably topic relevant.

It is best to settle on max 2-3 link building methods and concentrate on them for a few months because you will tend to uncover new and unusual opportunities after some time is spent.

I have some of my clients posting on PR 8 blogs and on sets of blogs getting over 2 million visitors a month. It took time to develop those relationships and knowledge of how the system works.

Always Use Mix Up of these Links.

It is Better to go with Mix up Links... Only one method is not Best at all.

The prospect of getting listed on the first page of a Search Engine (or Google - let's be specific) can seem a daunting task. That's logical considering how vast an ocean Google really is. But with a bit of smart optimization the task is quite achievable. There are a number of SEO tactics that you can employ to work your site up the Google listings, the most effective among them being getting backlinks to your site.

The very first thing you should do with a new site is whatever is under your current control to get indexed. That means linking from your other sites first, then asking your good friends to link to you as well from their other sites. After that, the real hard work begins.

whichever backlink method you select - make sure that you deep link to individual pages and posts. make sure each post is targeted and optimized for a specific keyword, and then run a campaign or articles, blog comments, etc. to that post/page.

Getting links from high authority sites, not just high PR, these send trust signals to google that your site is legit as a New York Times for example wouldn't link to a spammy viagra site, after applying these high authority links you will then find your crappy links work a lot better.

I aslo usually use backlinks from my own sites that have been trusted by google (Especially the site that have been got the site link). I do not use wide backlink (like blogroll), but i put my backlink in a post review with the anchor that really fit with the article.

The placement of the backlink in the article must be suitable. When people read the article, the chances that they will click on those links is 60%.

Goole loves natural links like this one. The downside from this method are that we need to have bunch of established authority site that loved by google (Trusted by google)

It depends upon the level of competition of the keywords that you are using. Let's say blog commenting and article marketing are good ones. But I'm sure that these two are not enough to get a good ranking if you're using a keywords having a very high level of competition.

I suggest you to diversify your link building campaign. Familiar with tiered links? There are many opinions roaming around the internet that this technique is very effective in getting a good ranking. You can see a diagram of it in Google.

Go back with diversifying your links, it is always a good idea if you are going to get links from different sources through different link building methods (no need to mention).

check out socialadr.com - you can get a free account - you will need to set up an account for each social bookmarking site in the system (i actually set up 3 adr accounts and found a fiverr gig to set them all up - great $5 investment!). you get credits by simply logging in and sharing other users posts - then you enter in your own url's and they will get bookmarked.

According to me the best techniques to get back links is forum posting, article submission and press releases. by using this method you can take back links which can go so long. The other and old methods are social media and directory submission. the methods also work but it takes so long to help you to increase your PR. If you want traffic then SMO is the best method to drive traffic form social media networks like facebook, twitter and linkedin etc.

Best way for new websites is to start slow while they are under 6 months old. For this I mainly use social bookmarking (sig!) as its relatively cheap and gets good results

Once the site has become a little more established then I start branching out and doing article submissions, blog commenting, forum profiles etc.

Social media back links play a role, particularly Facebook, but apart from saying quality, diverse, authority and random links, I haven't got a clue. I think I said as much as I know. It has to look natural, and also like you're an expert, so I don't think anyone knows for sure, cause if they did, Google just tweaked it's algorithms five minutes ago.

Best backlinks? High PageRank homepage backlinks... I'm not even being biased either.

Here's several examples of websites that have had HUGE gains in a matter of weeks from high PageRank backlinks, and these aren't for easy keywords.

Sure, diversity is key in backlinks, but if the sources already have good Google credibility and trust (ie PageRank), you wouldn't believe how powerful they are.
