Does linking to other websites add to your site's SEO? Ive seen my competitors have huge lists of different blogs on their blog roll and most with no link back. I know inlinks increase SEO but is there any effect if I link to others?

Linking out to trusted authority sites which add further value to your visitors can help your site rank higher. It's not a mandatory thing however, you can still rank high without doing this.

That's right. By linking to authority sites can help you increase your exposure on the web.

    Hello Fred,

This is a way to build the trust and authority of your site. Generally you would only use high trust authority websites for this. Examples would be google.com, yahoo.com, wikipedia.com, etc.

I have found that this can have a significant effect on rankings.

Link out to an authority website with your keyword in anchor text. Don't forget to add rel="nofollow" to it.

I think put dofollow in it is fine too,
but the more important is the anchor text for external links contains your main keyword

Important guidelines that I’d recommend in outbound links from an SEO perspective are:

    a. make sure it's not too many links (too many outbound links can be frowned upon by SE’s)

    b. keep them relevant

    c. use appropriate keywords as anchor text (the words you use as the link can help both you and the site you’re linking to with SEs)

    d. only make link to high ranking sites (some SEOs argue that if you link to highly ranking sites for the keywords that you’re after that it will have more impact).

SEO benefits of outbound links are something I believe in but they are also something not to be worked up about too much.

I use Wordpress Seo plugin by Yoast. When I run Page Analysis, it always suggests adding a few outgoing links. So I try not to forget that.

Google seeks to give higher priority to informative pages rather than sales pushing. And the logic seems to be quite self-evident: greedy pages have problems adding links that lead away from their site, generous pages have not - and win.

If your out bound link is pointing to an authority site then it will build a trust relationship between your site and search engines but not SEO ranking. Although if your site get a trust relationship with search engines like having quality contents and authority links then your site's ranking will improve.

Be aware of linking to other sites. According to Google Webmaster Guidelines, linking to bad "neighborhoods" will have bad effects to your site.

True - but if and only if you link to related, relevant, and high (authority) PR sites. Both inbound and outbound links are seen by Google as important factor in ranking you on SERPs. Sometimes you also have to link out from other site, rather than just hoarding your inbound links.
