SEO SpyGlass Concerns/Confusion

I'm confused about how getting links from the same places as my competitors allows me to outrank them.

I guess if you could replicate the same links as your #1 competitor, you might take over #2?

Is there something I'm missing here?

My SEO experience is limited and I would appreciate your insight.

    This is the way that I would explain it. Your competitor is ranked #1. What is the reason for this? Well, it could be that his on page SEO is better than everyone else, or it could be the offpage seo factors. Backlinks are the most important part of this.

    By coping your competitor's backlinks, you are giving yourself the same link juice that he is getting. So your right that if you did nothing else, you may rank #2. But now suppose that in additon to copying your competitor's backlinks, you also are pursuing your own extensive backlinking campaign. Now you get the juice of your competitor, and the juice your building yourself. Twice the juice equals beating your competitor.

      It's about understanding what your competitor's are doing, copying their successes, and then surpassing them.

    Think of it as getting the same engine in your racing car as your #1 competitor. It gives you a good chance of beating them in a race compared to the old underpowered engine you were previously using.

    i'd also suggest that you closely monitor the entire top 10 so that you know what each of them is doing in terms of backlinks and try get their best links too - this definitely puts you in the win
