StumbleUpon the hidden giant

According to StatCounter's measurements, StumbleUpon has just surpassed Facebook and now delivers more than half of all social media referral traffic in the U.S. StumbleUpon founder and CEO Garret Camp tweeted the news this afternoon.

Facebook achieved this goal in April of 2010, but StumbleUpon was already well on its way.

At that time, StumbleUpon already gave twice as many referrals as Twitter.

StumbleUpon's user experience is fanciful and fun, but its traffic power for publishers is quite serious.

While the other social networks make the headlines, StumbleUpon has been a quiet success story.

In light of today's news, it won't be so quiet for long.

Pretty interesting. I've always used StumbleUpon, but have found I've been getting less traffic from them than I used to.

Thats surprising.Stumbleupon is a popular site no doubt. But the myth that Facebook is the best referral among the social media sites is mistaken as proved by the observation.

    Hi quentin,

    That's interesting news.

However, I think we'll have to see more data in the coming months to know if stumble can keep it up.

If you look at the graph, stumble's figures are mainly consistent, the figures doesn't dip nor rise too much. While if you look at FB's figures, it's on an upward trend. There are months when it dips but it goes right back up in an upward trend.

By the way, based on the graph, stumble also surpassed FB last May 2010 but it did not stayed that way for a long time.

    Best regards,

    Mary

It's hidden because its a system you can't really game, you've got to provide really viral content that people pass along. It also helps to become a member and build relationships, but I guess that can be said about most things.

The distinction to make here is that StumbleUpon was essentially made to drive referrals while Facebook wasn't.

I got a lot of traffic from StubleUpon on one of my websites once. The only problem with StumbleUpon is that it can be very hard to keep the users on your website for longer than a few seconds if it isn't very visually appealing.

I do find I can get 200 in a day from StumbleUpon, but that's the day it is first submitted. I don't tend to get much after that.
