Sorry, question from a new guy about wordpress

Hello everybody. I have been reading the forum for a couple weeks and have a learned a ton. Thank you for taking time to post. I didn't want to post until I did a great deal of reading but I think I missed some obvious things. I have two questions:

1.) I have read a lot about pages when posting on our blogs. Should I be posting each different entry on a different page? Not worried about marketing or seo on past blogs, I have always posted posts rather than pages.

2.) I have also read a lot about optimizing code for good seo. I think I have a good handle on the more obvious things but since the site I'm getting ready to launch is wordpress based, is WP code html friendly or are there modifications to be made. (I have a couple of seo plugins installed)

  • Hi there, posts are generally better because they are picked up by rss feeds. It's all a matter of what you are planning on doing though Pages live outside the blog structure and are really intended for things like a site map, contact form, privacy policy etc but of course can be used just like posts except you cannot assign categories and generally they can't be read in an rss feed reader.

    You can of course make changes to the template files for code but a good SEO plugin like Platinum SEO is probably all that you need. Add in a nice Site Map plugin and away you go

    • Forgive me ignorance but if I'm posting, the blog posts are all on one page right now scrolling down. Other blogs seem to have one post on one page. What am I missing if anything?
  • 1.)No to making a new page for each posting. Making appropriate categories for your postings is a good idea and, sometimes, setting up a page for each category is good but not necessary.

    2.) "all-in-one-seo" is a good plugin to use. To make your WP posts more search engine friendly, go to Settings/Permalinks and check Custom Structure and put this in the box: /%category%/%postname% then save.

      So how are some people getting hundreds or thousands of pages on their site? Kontera, for example, denied my site because, I assume it only has one page being so new.

      Thanks for the permalink info. I did do that and do have all-in-one seo installed.

  • Pages are good for "static" type info that you want to remove out of the flow of the blog... pages like "contact us" & "about us", that kinda stuff.
  • actually I think a page can be use as better tool to get onsite seo like keyword density and so on.. but 90% of SEO effort is actually the ability to get incoming links....
