Which Ads Will Google Show?

Hi guys,

I have a pretty successful campaign on the Adwords Content network (lot of traffic and good CTR) but I cant really see which ones of the keywords in my adgroup that´s performing.

Today I have about 50-60 keywords in that adgroup.

1. Is the only solution to create a separate adgroup for each and every one of the 60 keywords?

2. I am using great software (Sitesniper) for finding Site-targeted ads/websites for my main keywords. But on many of these sites my ads from the Content network is already showing - So is it better to start using site-targeting where I can see/monitor conversions per keyword versus the content campaign

3. Which ads will Google choose if I use site-targeting AND have the content campaign turned on?

Any thoughts or strategies on this would be much appreciated (I´ll buy a good answer a beer).

  • Targeting does not happen at the keyword level on the Content Network. The whole group of keywods in the ad group as well as the ad text is used to determine a theme and match that theme to a webpage or other demographic. For that reason, I often create adgroups with only one keyword because I cannot tell which keyword is being matched to what theme and this is the only way to get meaningful data.

    If you are usng site targeting then your keyword is not tiggering the ad. It is good to site target because you can measure the ROI at the specific site. You can even target specific sections of a site now.

    I'm not really sure, but you could easily test this by adding a querystring parameter to your destination URL and then check your server logs to see which ad takes precedence.
