Hey guys,

I was doing keyword research and I checked the first page for this keyword

how to lose weight fast

And to my surprise, the site ranking on the first spot is only 2 months old  the domain was registered in july !

The keyword is getting 130k+ exact local searches per month ! ! ! and the copitition is so damn hard,

I know people with a 5 figures SEO budget and they didn't get to the first SPOT of competitive keywords this fast,

Can someone please give me a logical explanation of what's going on ?

Thanks you
Hamza

Hmm... I guess building links to a new site to fast won't do as much damage as some people suggest.

    8,000 plus backlinks (that shows)
    PR 6 - 5
    PR 5 - 18
    PR 4 - 70 plus
    PR 3 - 50 plus
    PR 2 - 40 plus

Might have also redirected a PR and/or aged domain with the htaccess file as well. But it looks like the backlinks.

Yeah, that's the one, I checked too and it says 8000 links, considering that tools don't usually give an accurate number of backlinks only the site owner knows how much links the site actually have lol

May i know how do you sort those links based on PR ?

        hereshowtoloseweightfast.com

and as thecableguy suggested, building so many links at once isn't as harmful as people think,

Yeah they do carry more weight than inner pages. I'd say 95% of the PR links are homepage links (unrelated material mostly) and the 0 PR pages are almost all inner pages. It appears the owner either bought the homepage links or purchased the domains. Hope it's not somebody on this forum

                nice one :-)
but i'll try to prove it in this forum that inner page can still rank.. i'll report after i achieve the first position on first page of Google

I see the same site as #1 in Google SERPs for that keyword.

8k backlinks, I'm checking the site now with seospyglass, I want to see what they used for their anchor text on most of the backlinks...

You must be looking at something else. All the top 10 sites for that keyword are high PR, have some age and a ton of backlinks.

The number 1 site (if you check using scroogle) is momswhothink dot com.

That domain is almost 12 years old.

    - lots of info on the front page
    - spammed the comments
    - lots of backlinks, fast

Initially it looks like great content to Google. It happens to a lot of sites that are over optimized. It won't last, unless they keep the content coming, get organic traffic and continue backlinking.

      This.

Heck, I've seen people build entire businesses around this model. Target highly searched niche's / up and coming trends, heavily optimize their site for the keyword, and spam the crap out of it. By the time Google catches on they will have already moved onto something else.

This works best with "trending" niches though.

Yeah its a business model that can pay the bills, but I prefer long standing sites that earn money over and over, especially if I was going to go through all of the effort to rank for a search term like this one.

I don't think the site would be deindexed however, in this case. But I do think it will bounce around a bit as all of the links settle to the inner pages of the blogs.

They are using a private high pr blog network for most of the links to that site. Unfortunately, the network is extremely limited and not open to the public at the moment, when it does open they only let a few people in and it runs $200/month.

Also looks like they used the Seo Ultimate Network and Build My Rank based on some of the domains I am seeing in the backlink profile.

Most of the backlinks I see so far are on index pages of that network, no doubt all the links are very fresh considering everything hasn't fell off the index pages of the backlink network sites.

Looks like JC Penney all over again, lol.

12K+ backlinks, most on index pages.

      http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/search?p=hereshowtoloseweightfast.com&bwm=i&bwmo=& bwmf=s

BTW, $200 would be dirt cheap for a network that large, If they keep you on the index page of all those domains.

Yeah, my bet would be they fall like a rock after those posts start to roll off and then they will climb back up a bit, but you never know.

What's the name of this network? I've only heard of Build My Rank, Linkvana and Backlink Solutions and none of them const this much...

Very impressive to be able to get to the top for that keyword though - even if it does not last that long.

By the way, that's not the only key phrase they are on the first page for according to SEM Rush: http://www.semrush.com/info/hereshow...weightfast.com.

After you outed the domain name, I bet Google will remove it quietly to page 9. Most probably the website owner won't be that happy with you folks...

All new sites get a google honeymoon - loads of traffic for many keywords while google analyzes bounce, pages visited, etc. Then, the site ranks on it's own.

Another similar thread here for the keyword car insurance on a 3 week old domain.

Yukon, the links won't stick on the homepage. They roll off anywhere from 24 to 76 hours usually. If you hit the network on the weekends they have a longer life span on the hp.

Unless you pay to have them stickied, in which case he has to pay for each article to be stickied on each site and its an additional fee. I looked at a few and they were not, looks like a couple have already rolled off.

You are wrong. The car insurance site has no chance of sticking around if its goal is to get any real traffic. Its presently on the second page. Once it goes for the front page it will be tanked probably less than 60-90 days.

Anyone that thinks page #2 isn't getting real traffic for the keyword car insurance is high!

That keyword isn't one of your lousy impulse buys, it's a keyword that people will dig for while shopping for better insurance rates.

Here educate yourself if you can

Top Google Ranking Gets Twice The Traffic Of #2 Ranking: Chitika

Mind you I have no doubt that the level of traffic that car insurance gets on page two would be high to you based on what probably are the low volume keywords you go after but that doesn't change the facts. #12 is not ranking. If you want to believe that the objective of that site is to sit at less than one percent of the traffic be my guess. No one claims there is no traffic at that spot but it is not where the REAL traffic is.

Stop reading & start testing how things really work with the SERPs.

I'm in the download niche & real traffic will dig in the SERPs until they find what they want, that's real testing & not some lame seo blog or WSO.

When people shop for insurance they won't stop at the first result that's just silly, they shop around for insurance. Sure #1 gets great traffic (I think I already said that), I'm very sure If someone bumped Geico from #1 that they would have everyone & their brother breathing down their neck.

Man it's crazy what people will believe from a WSO or an seo blog.

Again stop reading so much & start doing your own testing & use the ole noggin.

Don't be silly Yukon. I do more research and testing than you probably do. I merely linked to that because its a solid piece that should have far more credibility than any poster at WF and that would definitely include you and I. Those numbers match my and many others experience not exactly for ever serp but theres absolutely no doubt second page gets far less looks.

Now try a less lame comeback and post some easy rankings for truly competitive serps. Like I always say prove it in the serps.

When people shop for insurance they won't stop at the first result that's just silly, they shop around for insurance.
Straman arguments ARE silly. I said nothing about anyone stopping at first page. As a matter of fact people really looking for insurance will put in the state they are looking to get insurance in . If you think the download niche is like the consumer insurance niche you not only need to learn SEO you need to learn something about markets.

Put the old noggin as you call it into some use.

You are party right - even if you are on 2nd page you will be getting traffic but not as much as on 1st page and the difference will be dramaticall.

Does everyone knows that the Google search results vary ( for sure ) depending where are you localy searching from ( Google has lots of local servers that returns the information depending on your position) ?!
Example : if someone from UK search for top rated car insurance it will return one result different than another one from US

        LOL...

I am ranking for a 2 word phrase on the top of the 2nd page for a competitive keyword and my site gets a whole lot of traffic... I have actually decided to not do any SEO work on that phrase because of the current results.

Trying to push it more might only get u down instead of up XD

Damn, i wonder the kind of bank this guys is making now ... 100k+ exact searches per month

I hate to be the bearer of bad news...but,

'how to lose weight fast' gets nowhere near 100-200k searches per month. Google's estimator is WAY off on that one. I do know this from hands on experience with that exact keyword, so I'm not blowing smoke here.

I'm sure that site is making some money - but I don't think it's as much as everyone here thinks it is if you saw the actual traffic from it =)

actually before that thread was deleted a guy came on saying he was the one that owned the site and he wasn't making money (majorly ticked it was being talked about though) which is hardly surprising if he wasn't since the site only made money if people filled out a multiple page form. Bounce rate on those pages is high.

I'll disagree with you though . To me Its a foolish use of a network. There are plenty of networks you can get mad traffic for at the top of serps where it would not suffer the same fate it would with car insurance. In that serp he would eventually be reported given the high profile.

Nonsense. You just didn't know how to efficiently get off of the second page (and despite the fact that your stated strategy is to rank in serps no one else targets). No one says okay I am on the second page so I am going to stop without trying. They take some kind of stab at it and then find out they can't move up. In which case they didn't DECIDE not to go to the first page they just couldn't. entirely different matter.

Because seo is what I do to make a living. Therefor, its in my best interest as a business professional to know what networks and services are out there, what their policies are, how much they cost and how well they work.

Every time a new network or service hits the market I test it, regardless of how much it costs. I have used or currently use, every thing this site is using to get their rankings, based on a brief analysis of his backlink profile..

A couple hundred at most. Most of the .info's in his backlink profile look like they come from Seo Ultimate Network (there are a couple other networks that use .info's also) and then either BMR or Linkvana for many of the others.

I would also guess that he used either a few Fiverr blog network submission gigs or some blog network submission services from forums like this one.

It feel more like a spam tactic to me, I notice there's aren't any likes from facebook.

Perhaps the picture, the content h1 h2 h3 tag, blahblah are all were filled up with his main keyword.

I'm sure he is using artificial tactic to rule the #1.

Don't think it will remain any longer, feels like a short term of #1.

Maybe they are the same people behind:

Internet Marketing Company | SEO Services | Website Marketing Agency

Since they link to them on the home page using the anchor text "seo services" about 2 thirds down. I've never heard of them, but they seem to have some impressive ranking examples.

Wow, I would be pissed off if this were my site and it was been ripped apart on a public SEO forum. I think it will be prudent when you find an anomaly in the SERPs to do your own research into what the site is doing instead of making it public... this is how you uncover the golden nuggets!

I have a concern, which is that if people are able to manipulate the search engine this easily with the use of high pr pages, won't it be just a matter of time until the G Masters change their algortithm to relfect this?

I use 'Build My Rank' for lots of my sites and they are all fundamentally based on this idea...

#1) This is not even close to the hardest keyword on earth.

#2) This actually happens quite a bit, even for really hard keywords. Check back in a month or 2, and this site will PROBABLY not be on page 1, or even in the top 50.

We rank for a couple phrases that are quite a bit harder than the above keyword, and we see crappy sites like these go into page 1...then are gone after a few weeks, never to return. Once you get ranked for these kinds of phrases, you become a target for the manual police - and sites like these do not pass manual inspection - rarely if ever.

I am the previous owner of a site which i ranked #2 in Google UK for "lose weight" and "lose weight fast" (NOT the site in my sig). I am also on page #1 in Google.com for "lose weight".

YES, i also *thought* this is the hardest keyword on Earth, but i managed it to rank and it was ratehr EFFORTLESSLY and i did not spend money on SEO.

The key was a good site/design/unique content - and then CONSISTENCY in backlinks and articles etc.

BY THE WAY: "lose weight" and "lose weight fast" are PROBABLY the most over-rated keywords EVER. Don't even remotely think that ranking for that KW #2 in Google will make you a millionaire - FAR FROM THE TRUTH.

There are keywords which are FAR better than "lose weight", some long tails in that niche. "Lose weight" will give you very bad bounce rate and hardly conversion if you only shoot for this keyword. It's more a "bragging thing" than a real life money maker.

YOU CAN rank for such keywords if you try to make an authority site covering many related and Google relevant keywords - with decent content and then linking to your content/articles. You probably cant do it in a 2 months...but it IS doable.

"COMPETITION" only exists in your mind!! <-- i am dead serious!

Its a research keyword not necessarily a buying one. People rarely draw the difference and yes looking at it closer it is really a weak first page. Still a number one or two in the niche is not too shabby even if its not quite up to the hype of the hardest keyword.

        Gil,

when i made that site approx 2 years ago i didn't dream that i will ever rank remotely anywhere near page #1 - let alone for "lose weight" or "lose weight fast".
I made the site and did a few article submissions and then did *nothing* with the site for 6-10 months. In other words: I let it sit.

Then i discovered i was starting to rank page #4 or something and realized i can do it. I submitted more content to the site.

What i did in terms of link building:

I started out with blog networks like seolinkvine, articleranks where i submitted maybe one article a week. (Later on i stopped seolinkvine since not satisfied with the result). I switched to authority link network.

I did occasional submissions on article directories and several blasts with Article Marketing Robot (link to my blog, i cover AMR a few times there) - and i occasionally used Seo software like xgenseo.

I think i also hired a few guys from fiverr for senuke blasts. But the main "work" was mainly my submissions to blog networks like authority link network.

I don't count my backlinks so i dont have numbers how many links i made per day or week...i just know that some people commented me they were baffled by the huge number of backlinks the site had. But in terms of SEO it was really nothing out of the ordinary, i didnt buy links and didnt buy "high PR" links or anything similar)

The whole process..lasted "several months"....approx. 4+ months *after* i discovered i made it to page #4 or so in Google after that time period where i didnt do anything with the site.

As to answer your question...the domain name...and the fact that "how to lose weight fast" is already a long tail keyword..5 words...it IS easy to rank (i am serious again) if you don't do stupid things. I dont know about 2 months tho..but all long tails are rather easy.

Can you please tell us more about what you mean with stupid things ?

And IMHO, I think when someone make it to the top of a highly searched term like this, and even if it's not a buying keyword he should have a highly converting squeeze page in place,

So even if you dropped after a few weeks you would still have a decent asset which is the list ...

Indeed, with over 40K exact searches a month, surely he's already gotten people to op-tin, lol. So even if he if Google drops him, he should be fine. Smart marketer.

Actually if you think about it. Of course domain age doesn't count.

Do any of you remember what the web looked like in 1998? Pre-Google?

If domain age counted for that much then google itself wouldn't even rank. Hell, a ****ty page from Netscape's comment page should rank very well for the term 'Browser' if that were the case.

And on another note, to anyone that's saying this guy isn't getting a ton of buying traffic - you're nuts!

Look at the keyword - "how to lose weight fast?"

Is there no buying urgency in that keyword?

Let me put it another way, if the keyword was "how to lose weight sometime in the next year or so when I can be bothered" then yeah, maybe the audience has some time to really research it.

This is a highly targeted keyword.

If this guy spent $200 a month to be ranked for YES, the #1 keyword in the weight loss niche, he will make that over and over again just with the list he is building.

      This is smart ****!

      I love threads like this.

I am not sure about insurance (as people shop around) but I know from experience that a site ranking at position 7/8 of first page of Google with 90K searches a month gets only a few 100s visitors per month.

The claimed owner of car insurance says he gets around 50+ visitors a day before that thread was deleted.

But this is a great work anyway.

I am good friends with the guy who ranked this site. We even work in the same company.

No, we're not talking, not now, not ever.

    Thank you

I've been a fan of the site's ranking speed even before this thread was started. But I think it just lost its top ranking.

Probably a coincidence because that guy is complaining about aged authority sites winning out. The "how to lose weight fast" keyword has a 2-3 month old sites at the top.

The guy that started that thread actually owns "howtoloseweightfast", read a few posts down he states it there.

Well actually, he claims to own it

Yes, he did. Now we know who the person is.

The top ranking site in that keyword has so few backlinks, it shouldn't even appear on first page. There's quite a big movement in SERPS right now except for authority sites.
