Say I want to rank for

keywords strategies
keywords systems

both get good searches and I think I want to get traffic from both

domain for either of course EMD are long gone

so why not

www.keyword-systems-strategies.com

or some variation thereof

Google care about this?
Surfers I think would not care
I have seen this done but not often (not that you would know by looking at this what the person was doing when he bought the domain)
#domains #double

    I think this is ok.
If you were trying to rank for both keywords, it's not bad...
but it's not really necessary as much as other factors to rank for the keywords.

Another thing you could try is target one keyword like "keywords systems" as your main keyword...and then target other keywords by making other pages.
    ex. www.keywords-systems. com/keywords-strategies

Ya I am not sure I just might do two different domains
    however
I was told by a wise old webmaster then you have to backlink two domains and do twice as much work etc etc so I might just do a double name domain , still thinking

i think the double name domain would accomplish the same thing as buying two separate ones if you just look at simply the SERP benefit of the kw in the domain name........for both kw combinations at once

or at least I THINK it would

This is not really a big issue. You could rank for both even without any of the keywords in your domain.
Make relevant content, on-page seo, and backlink with keyword anchor text.

If doing this was actually important to your keyword ranking, you would see more sites with domains like www.lose-weight-quickly-fast-easily-today.com

I do think that the kw in the url is somewhat important, kw in the domain
I see quite a few EMDs ranking top 5
then again I see quite a few with the kw not in the domain and not in the URL ranking just as high

I agree with @lovboa as this not being a big issue.
You are not trying to rank a "website" for these terms... simply "web pages".
With this in mind choose whatever domain you think focuses on the more competitive phrase and optimise the home page for the most competitive terms and then build out specific pages for all other related terms and synomyns.
Keywords in your domain name can be useful but it isn't the holy grail as such. Build out valuable content and develop links through multiple different sources to your home page and sub pages you wish to rank for. By creating an authoritive site you will find it so much more lucrative in the long term to expand your reach for additional terms too.

I agree with Simpleseotips don't focus too much on the domain, also having it hyphenated and so long looks spammy to me.

As sometime you use keyword in sentence or in article , the same way you can use it in domain also. As it will be more beneficial. But remember one thing that your such domain for any page , must hold the meaningful and related information according to the domain name. As people visit any page by seeing the domain name first , with a view to get information related to those words used in domain.

Having keywords in domain is necessary but having Hyphens (-) could be an obstacle. I hardly see Google ranking websites with Hyphens on the top... I mean it does rank them, but in very rare cases.

Google does take keywords in domain in account.... but Matt Cutts himself advised that you should promote your brand using your domain.

There are many other ways of targeting keywords... Add them in your content, use them in your backlinking strategies etc.

Just want to point out that domain: keywords strategies, keyword systems and keyword-systems-strategies are three different keywords and consequently have different number of searches and competition.

You should not expect the same no. of searches from keywords-systems-strategies as with keyword strategies or keyword systems.

If all the Exact match domains are gone try finding another similar keyword with similar search volumes. Try not to choose hyphenated domains. In my opinion they do not do as well as non hyphenated domains.

No matter which keyword you choose ultimately your ranking capability of the targeted keywords will depend more on unique relevant content and on-page and off page SEO than just the domain name itself.
