Quick question for any SEO experts>? Better to have your site in www. or without www. I have seen some sites which ranked highly for www for a certain KW but nowhere to be seen for the non www. version. And in another KW, the non www. of the same website ranked highly but the www. version nowhere to be seen. Any correlation between all these or they all the same. Pretty confusing to me.

There is no difference in having www.site.com or site.com in terms of SEO. What matters is that you should stick to one and build your links accordingly from the start. The reason you don't see one version on the search results is that backlinks to www.site.com do not pass to site.com and vice versa.

My personal preference is to use www.

For some of my sites search results show the site without www although I built all my backlinks with www... well I suppose it makes no difference as long as they are ranking well..

        Hi Mate,

Search engines treat them as separate domains just as they
        do for subdomains.

        google.com
        www.google.com
        gmail.google.com

They are all treated as different domains, and you should
choose 1 and link to the same one everytime.

I personally backlink to the non www domain.

Proof: Preferred domain (www or non-www) - Webmaster Tools Help

        This is a dead giveaway...

we may treat the www and non-www versions of the domain as separate references to separate pages
People assuming they are the same are spreading the
        wrong message.

        Take Care,

        Michael Silvester

Where do you get this stuff from, Rakesh? That's nonsense ...

FWIW, people trust your site more if they see the www. and are more likely to click-through from the SERP to your site. (from a case study I read). Sorry can't be bothered to look for it at the moment.

It still doesn't have any SEO/ranking benefits though.

But your opinion doesn't matter because you are not an expert: just by posting this you showed how ignorant you are - so next time better don't comment about things you know nothing about.

Thks for all the inputs, whatever difference your opinions may be. Personally, what I observed from the sites I mentioned in my post is that these 2 same sites, one without www. and one with the www. both have different number of backlinks. So I think when you do the BL, it will go to whichever you mentioned. But I still cannot get it why 2 different KW shows up 2 different results ( one with the www. which had a higher BL and the other without the www. with a much lower BL. The reason I was interested in this is that when I do the KW research in Market Samurai, the site without the www. showed a much lowered BL which was in my opinion a bit misleading...

If you have a long domain name having no www. seems to make more sense.

The www. don't carry any weight SEO-wise though so don't worry about that.

Not much difference between them as long as you set the redirect301 correctly. By the way I notice big sites like Youtube, Facebook and Zappos using "www" so that is my preference. I can name a few sites that prefer non-www too, like Digg.

From my exprience there is no difference between 'www.' or 'no www.'. Sometimes it's even better to have adress without www. because it looks nicer.

Like others have said, it is basically a matter of preference. Just pick one and stick with it. If you have both types of links you can use google webmaster tools to pick which they will favor and all links of the other type will count as the one that you pick!

This can help with your rankings.

Doesn't matter as long as all your backlinks point to the same one!
