Forwarding Domain Names

Does forwarding domain names that you really do not want to work on anymore help you in; your search engine ranking, your overall google pagerank, or in any way at all?

I always heard multiple domain names with the duplicate content on them can hurt your rankings and everything. But what about just forwarding unused names to your main site?

Does this hurt you or can it help you?

The main reason I wonder if because I have done this two times now. Once in the past and when I did it (forward the unused domain name to another of mine), when I checked next my pagerank changed to a 2. Now I took a domain I was going to let expire because I got tired of trying to work with it so I forwarded the name to another one of my domain names. Now my site has a pagerank of 1.

So which makes me curious about this. Wouldn't the search engines see this as duplicate content? Is it better to forward... or just slap a little content on each domain and link them to each other?

    Hi,

    Getting page rank is about getting back links, you get backlinks by having other sites pointing to yours, if there is no content on the site - and it is forwarded to another you ain't gonna get it ranked.

    Are you sure you mean forwarding or perhaps parked domains?

      Yeah I know and understand some about building back links, which I have been trying to do that via free directories and such some. Even a few link trade sites.

      But yeah I am talking about forwarding. Maybe in the past I had more ppl linking to one of my old sites then I thought. Thanks for sharing this with me.

    Doing a 301? redirect of the domain to your main page should do no harm, providing it had some backlinks some link juice will flow to the main site.

    There's a company that specializes in renting mis-spelled domain names, so you can catch type-in traffic for WallyMart by forwarding it to our site.

      Thanks about sharing the idea of using mis-spelled domain names, but I am sure this would require some nice money, which I do not have atm . If you want you can msg me the site and I will check it out at least.

    Make sure that you add a "no index" metatag in the index file of the fowarding domain.. Otherwise the search engines might view it as double content and penalize your site..

      I am doing a domain redirect through godaddy, or forwarding I would guess. Can you add "no index" to that type?

      Wiggles was the name of one of my old pups who passed away and I loved, and the year, is well my birth year . Woot Woot... 1 year older in 4 days

          LOL! I'm sure you know what I meant Now it is 3 days Woot Woot! Want to do me a huge favor :rolleyes: visit the gaming site in my signature and play a game.

          I actually like the Bob the Robber game which I shared on StumbleUpon today, hoping it will draw traffic. Heck a few weeks ago I got very lucky with one game it got Stumbled on and drove me over 5K in traffic in the span of 3 days.

            I have been wondering about the same question for a while and I posted that in another thread but it seems nobody has any clear idea about it. My assumption is that not only that works but is very efficient and the reason for my assumption is one of our competitors that has ranked first in a heavily competitive field has used that as one of their strategies. They have not only bought and re-directed high PR domains to their main domain but also have done it for their sub-domains. They have lots of backlinks and strategies so it is hard for me to figure out how much that strategy has contributed to their success but anyways they are very successful in a very competitive field with more than 50 serious competitors.
