How long will it take for Backlinks to produce traffic?

I have submitted around 500 backlinks for my sites and still have not received increased traffic.

How long does it take directory backlinks to be listed? I have seen anywhere from 24hrs to 3 months.

How many visitors per day can I expect?

It depends on the pages the backlinks are located on and how often googlebot crawls that site.

That being said, usually those huge "we'll submit 500 links for $50" and the like aren't high quality and you may only notice a marginal increase in traffic.

When I build my own links I avoid nofollow links and target popular pages - I'll often get SE traffic within a week or two to the page being linked to.

It really depends on how quickly your keywords start ranking. Have you noticed any increase in those since submitting the links?

Totally agree. The main reason we build backlinks is they're beneficial to our keywords' ranking, though backlinks can generate some traffic, it's not as effective as good keyword ranking.

    Backlinks don't produce traffic.

    Backlinks produce SERP's rankings.

The extent to which SERP's rankings produce traffic varies enormously, according to a huge number of different parameters, none of them specified or discussed in your post, and for this reason nobody's going to be able to give you the quantified answer you've requested on the basis of the information you've provided. Sorry - just being realistic, here.

"Numbers of backlinks" alone have very, very little to do with anything. Not even SERP's rankings - let alone traffic.

You can see that for yourself, from the regularity with which pages with fewer backlinks outrank pages with more backlinks in Google's SERP's. (And that's without all the other factors that go in-between SERP's rankings and traffic production.)

SEO is about quality and relevance.

Imaginary experiment for you: you and I try to rank two different sites for the same keyword. I write articles containing that keyword as anchor-text for a link to that site at the end of the articles. I mass-submit those articles to article directories and get 50,000 article directory backlinks as a result (I used to do this, over two years ago, before I understood how backlinks work, but I eventually abandoned it because it's a waste of time compared with quality-based methods). You come up with a different plan, and you get only 50 backlinks for your site, but all of them are on relevant sites in the same niche, including some high-quality, well-established blogs and a few authority sites. You will trounce me for SEO. Your site will outrank mine overwhelmingly, in the SERP's. You understood the underlying basis of SEO and I didn't.

"Number of backlinks" alone mean nothing.

That depends on a large number of undiscussed factors. "Numbers of backlinks" isn't really one of them.

I guess I should take those backlinks out of my sig...

The ability for backlinks to deliver traffic to your website relies on several factors:
      • Number of people landing on page where link exists;
      • Placement of link on page -- is it easy to find;
      • Anchor text in the link -- Does it attract the reader's interest?
      • Does the description around the link convince readers to go ahead and click your link?

Most pages on the internet where links exist are pages that no one will ever see or look at, let alone follow the links on the page.

In the absence of the human finding the link and clicking it, the page will need to have some credibility with the search engines to give value to rankings.

If a page has neither human readers or search engine value, then it is like not having a backlink at all.

If you have thousands of links on pages that humans nor search engines value, you might as well have no presence online, because in effect you do not.

The easiest factor to increase traffic from your backlinks is how you present your link to readers.

The second easiest factor to influence is the traffic to a page where your link exists, by making sure that you get links on pages where people are already going.

And yeah, I knew Alexa was driving at a more important point, and I took her comments out of context. But it is more fun to poke her...

You wanna go after those High Page Rank backlinks man.

Some of the best places to get those include Squidoo, HubPages, Ezine Articles and many more.

One of the best strategies that I have used to generate an seemingly endless amount of backlinks is by submitting a massive amount of links to the top article directories.

I created a video on this exact strategy a few months back that I think will really help you out. Have a gander...

You need to have a lot of patients with backlinking, it's not something that happens overnight and than you suddenly have an increase in traffic. It is to the mercy of Google how it ranks your site and sometimes throws in a good mix of algorythms to really confuse us how we can rank / or not / for certain keywords .

if you have placed them in high PR sites, or you produced a good quality backlinks, usually you can see results 2 weeks or within a month, that is as far as I noticed.

if you do good links like guest posting on blogs, you get traffic as soon as they are live. if you follow most of the crap the SEO morons ( i mean experts....) will teach you, you wont see any traffic for months and you will have to spam ( I mean build) a lot more than 500 worthless links to get the same benefits of one good guest post on a popular blog in your niche.

That's funny ... who knew they used such "polite British understatement" in Orlando, Florida? I agree with you completely, but I'd have said "a lot more than 10,000 worthless links", not 500.

Gotta agree with Alexa. It doesn't matter how many backlinks your site has, if it isn't
ranking for terms that get searches - you won't get any traffic.

I find it always depend on where you put those backlinks. Of course, i tend to use backlinks more fore SE ranking than for traffic from the linked site. But it can definitely take a while, especially for those of us that are a little less patient.

you are asking something that is having too many possibilities. Traffics is not only depend on backlink alone, you need to look at your onpage SEO as well. And there is many types of backlinks, it depend whether you are having quality backlinks to your site or just some lousy profile backlinks..

I think the backlinks will not incrase your traffic directly in a short time if you only do directory submission. There are many ways get the traffic incrasing, like blog commenting, forum posting,it will attract the direct traffic to your site truiely. But if you want to get the originic traffic from search engines ,like google, you should build more quality backlinks naturally, bit depend on the quantities you have got ,you should pay more attention to the quality of the backlinks, only high pr backlinks will improve your search ranking.and it is the key you didn't see the traffic incrasing in your expection.
Backlinks could imrpove your SERP, so the higher your SERP IS,the more traffic you will get.

Depends on your keywords mate ... If you are optimized for high traffic keyword and reach page 1-2, you will start to see traffic.

If you chose a low traffic keyword you can get to #1 and still not see big traffic ...

Yes you are right in thinking that it takes that much time, so now you know all you can do is be patient and build more links in the meantime. A little hint, if you can get your site to link from a high PR site then the time taken for the backlinks to actually work on bringing in the traffic will be less like 2 weeks.

Allow me to add based on what I have seen observably working for me in the short term

1 Try to get popular on Facebook ....you will be surprised to see the traffic FB is capable of sending your way
2 Get hold of (or build one) a Twitter account with human followers in your site niche
3 Something as basic as forum & blog commenting (on the right forums and blogs of course)...numerous in your niche where comments are posted without moderation....the content needs to be compelling (not the spun kind); will get you lot more immediate traffic than the backlinking industry wants you to believe.
4 Try traffic exchanges and Alexa rank climbing methods (a google search will lead you to them) which will give you 80% plus inorganic traffic but it will give you quick traffic.

Selling backlinks is good business; buyers find value. But any backlink seller never sold any assured traffic.
