I am creating a new website, and before I pick out the domain name, and write the content, I want to determine which keywords I should focus on.

I could focus on either the word 'duplication,' or the word 'replication.' I want to determine which is the least competitive for SEO.

How do you go about finding the right keywords to focus the SEO efforts on?

Thanks!

    Hi Daniel!

I assume you mean that you have a keyword and are torn between "keyword duplication" and "keyword replication" or something to that effect.

To check your competition, you'll need to focus on the top 3 spots in Google for your keyword term (search in quotes).

Here's the checklist I use; apply this to each of the top 3 listings.

The more of these that you can answer "No" to, the better! The * symbol indicates a particularly important factor.
    • Is it a generic type of site? (Article directory, answer site, about.com, wisegeek.com, etc.)*
    • Is it a Root Domain?*
    • Is it Keyword Optimized? (URL, Title, Description, Page)
    • Does it have a lot of Quality, Relevant Content?*
    • Is the whole site (NOT just the page) Laser Targeted to your exact keyword?*
    • Are there 20 Links or less to the PAGE? (not the entire domain)*
    • Are they Quality/Relevant Links?
    • Is the PR of the PAGE 4 or less? (0 is best)
    • Are there other affiliates who know what they're doing?
    • Is it an Exact match domain?

Also, please please pleeeeasse make sure you go to Ezine Articles and type in your keyword in the search. Then click through to an article that has your exact keyword in it and make sure there are several relevant ads that somebody who's searching for your term would be likely to click.

You don't want to put up a site and then get 1 click a year because the ads are irrelevant or do not solve the searcher's dilemma(s).

    Good luck!
    Vic

To select a keyword for which you want to rank for you have to make sure that you put yourself in your visitors shoes and have to think how they think. Now once you have done this, type the keywords in Google's keyword tool. Make sure that your finalized list of keywords consists of those keywords that have a higher number of searches. Also check out the competition for these kewyords as that will give you an idea of how much effort and work you will have to put into it.
