Manually building backlinks - How much is too much?

Is it risky to spend ~20 hours a week on a new domain building backlinks (with a constant supply of backlinks). Will you run the risk of getting penalized by Google?

    google never penalized on link building, it penalize your domain if you do unnecessory and non reliable link building. so 20 hours doesn't matter for google.

    If you spend 20 hours a week to build a lot of reputatable and quality inbound links through creative link baiting campaigns then it is time well spent in most occassions.
    It's not so much the amount of time you spend building links that can either provide results or raise flags for Google, it is the actual volume and type of links which matter.

    If you are sourcing your links from unreputable sources such as link farms then you could run into trouble. If your links are mainly from blog commenting or forum profile links then these low value links won't provide great results (in my experience and opinion). However, if you spend the 20 hours creating content which is valuable to others then you can expect to benefit through natural inbound links which will stand to you a lot better than simply sourcing low quality links.

      My links are mostly from blog commenting, but I get them from SEO Spyglass, and only post if the page has a PR of at least 3. Are these still low value links?

      I usually post a unique article or 3 with a few inbound links per day on my website.

      Could you point me to any guides on link baiting campaigns? I'm unfamiliar with the term. I am pretty new to SEO, and open to anything that could help. Thanks for the reply.

    if you build relative links then google will never consider it as a spam or penalize your site but if you are doing irrelevant link building and build excessive links then google will penalize you. Keep update your content on timely basis so it never looks like a spam

      I take it by relative links you mean comments that relate to subject matter of the blog I'm commenting on?

    Darren Rowse has written a very good post about different link baiting techniques: 20 Linkbaiting Techniques

    You might be able to use this as a starting point to kick off ideas which would work for your niche.

    As for sourcing for links using software... personally, I'm not a fan. This is not to say that it won't be effective in the short term. However, my big fear is the long term reprecussions of adding links to places which anyone and everyone can add their own link to. If Google sees the page which contains dozens and hundreds of outbound links as spammy then your link could be tarred with the same brush as the others.
    It's not just about the PR of specific sites but also how the page content shares its relevancy with your own site.

    Just my 2 cents and I'm sure there are plenty of other members of this forum who swear by SEO Spyglass and other link building software solutions.

    There are never have limitation, the more backlink you gain, the better the result. However, there is one major condition is "quality", google only penalize site with tons of crap backlink from link farm and abnormal growing of the backlink
