I keep hearing that wordpress has better seo than Joomla... If this is true is it possible with joomla plugins and components to equal or surpass Wordpress seo?

Wordpress has a lot more plugins then joomla and I don't see how joomla could outrank a wordpress site with same anount, or little less, of backlink For better rankings I'll recomand you to use Wordpress.

All In One SEO Pack is the plugin that often used by Wordpress users. Joomla is not that SEO friendly but your can design an outstanding website with simple coding. Depends what kind of site you are looking at, SEO friendly or a beautiful website. Both have their own strengths

Why is Joomla better at making beautiful websites? What's it like, in terms of interface and features and what not

You don't need any Joomla plugins, you simply need better content than your competition. Organic backlinking should follow (although we all know we can manipulate this regardless of CMS platform).

The WP versus Joomla SEO debate is a nonsense in itsself. You may find decent WP plugin's that measure keyword density etc but that brings it back to the 'content is king' debate.

Look at it this way...A WP site with good content and no SEO plugins will outperform a Joomla site with great SEO plugins and poor content. And vice versa.

      Google likes content.

You have sh440sef and acesef and some other add ons for joomla that can handle your urls. They both costs money(acesef have a free version with backlink to them). If you plan to give a joomla site sef urls you should first check if all your third party add on's support sef urls, if they dont a sef ext file for that component needs to be created.

So first off, check what you have installed and check if the components used support sh404sef or acesef.

For joomla I have used a SEOFISH plugin with good results.

For me, having used both, wordpress definitely give better results. I tried to install the same content on a joomla site which I then converted into wordpress. the results are much better with wordpress.

First post here but I am big fan of Joomla and have to agree with noostyle that content is king. The thing I like about Joomla over WP is that I believe it can be a bit more interactive then WP so you can build sites that users help build content.

Not entirely true. WordPress out of the box, makes it a bit harder to create sites with bad on-page SEO, but in the end, it really doesn't matter that much as to what HTML authoring tool or CMS you use in terms of good SEO.

As a user of both I can see why people like Wordpress, however because it's easier to use doesn't mean it's necessarily better - I find Wordpress extremely frustrating at times when similar functionality can be done twice as fast in joomla.

Both use similar functionality in that Wordpress uses widgets and plugins - joomla uses components, modules and plugins. However I personally feel as developer you have a lot more flexibility when it comes to customizing and developing your own addons in joomla.

Whilst Wordpress has a lot of addons joomla also has 5000+ if I recall...

Both have great templates however I do think joomla has the edge, plus you have far more control as a developer over your joomla layouts.

For seo purposes unless you actually know the basic fundamentals of onsite seo installing a plugin on either a joomla or WP is not going to do you much anyway. I have had great success with rankng sites with joomla but don't see any reason why I wouldn't have the same success using Wordpress and similar strategies. You have to know what your doing in the first place with seo. Just because you own a car doesn't mean you know how to drive it! Lol

For more complex projects i will always go for joomla - for quick sites I tend to use Wordpress.

I used to be an ardent joomla user who at one time would never even consider WP but you have to look all your options and be able to deploy the best tool to get the job done. That's why I now use both.

I outrank wordpress sites with ease every day. I have hundreds of Joomla sites ranking in some top spots in very competitive niches, so I believe your statement is incorrect. I don't care if you have plugins that can ping your sites, or do this or that, it doesn't matter.

Who cares? I actually will disagree with the plug ins comment as well. More plugins that do nearly the same thing, isn't exactly more beneficial.

How is Joomla NOT SEO friendly? Are you telling me it is to hard for you to click a button for SEF URLs, and changing htaccess.txt to .htaccess? Something that takes literally 15 seconds to do?

Like I said before, I have hundreds of Joomla websites outranking many wordpress sites. The CMS isn't going to do the work for you. Quit lying to yourselves thinking that wordpress is going to be the solution to sky rocket you to #1 with minimal effort.

Much more flexible out of the box. It does a lot more things and easy to overextend. You can build giant sites with better security and more flexibility. Wordpress can too with the right developer, but Joomla sites are typically higher quality.

Plugin range for Joomla is huge as well. It may be harder to use for you, but that is because you're making some real sites instead of just garbage you throw up there wanting to make money!

This shows that you guys don't even use Joomla. If you can not click a couple buttons, you have no business even forming an opinion.

Drupal, Joomla, Magento, Reliant.. they all have amazing plugins. There are plugins that allow you to ping your sites with joomla as well, but who really cares about that? Do you guys believe pinging is the road to the almighty first page of google? Come on now..

Anyway, to the OP... Joomla is a great CMS. Wordpress is solid, so is drupal and many others. If you really want results for your website, the CMS used isn't the issue. I have ranked tons and tons of sites with EVERY CMS, or at least the major ones, and there is no difference. There is still work involved, and you still need to know what you are doing to get results..

One thing to think about is Google wanting to eliminate affiliate sites. Now, what is what 99.9 % of mini-sites, affiliate blogs and Amazon product-name-domains use, what do they all have in common? Of course--it's WordPress! Joomla and Drupal, however, are mostly used on authority- content- community- etc. sites.

So, Google may give WP a red flag meaning, if they finally decide to get rid of affiliates. Its more safe to take the longer learning curve and have the sites to be built on Joomla or Drupal, I think.

Wordpress is usually the beginner step, then joomla, and then Drupal.

Just because you guys don't know how to use other CMS's doesn't make Wordpress the better CMS for SEO purposes. Maybe it is the easiest CMS to learn, but easy doesn't always mean better.

I personally prefer Joomla! because it's a lot easier to customize in my opinion (if you know some coding or know how to figure it out) knowing how to use joomla to begin with helps tremendously, there are some good tutorials on Lynda.com...

As far as SEO goes.. there are some good plugins, but I'd have to agree there are better functioning plugins for WP. With that being said.. Content is king.

Personally while reading this thread I couldn't help but think this may be the first "blood vs crips" on the internet .. between "Joomla! vs WordPress" ... lol

In my opinion though, .. learning Joomla! is well worth the time as I find it better to use than WordPress.. wordpress just seems too simple to me.

One thing that wasn't mentioned here is that all the "gurus" over the years have been using WordPress (because it's older than Joomla!?) I honestly don't know which came first.. but anyway.. more plugins were made for specific uses for WordPress by people in our "industry" .. we just need more people using Joomla and creating quality extensions that do what we want...

So get your outsource crews ready folks!

All too often I see a great plugin... but alas I won't buy it because it's only for WordPress and the majority of my sites are Joomla! I only have a handful of WordPress sites.. and I'm not too keen on them.

Surely you are wrong. Which domain gets indexed first has nothing to do with which CMS you use. This is completely idiotic to say one CMS is better based on how long it takes for googlebot to get to the site...

So if we're judging which CMS is better, by which one can someone with no experience use immediately with no learning curve, Wordpress would be the better choice. Just because something is easy to understand, doesn't make it better.

Wordpress is more of a blogging platform which is very easy to use as a spam.

I have used both Joomla and Wordpress, found better control over Joomla.

Whyn I dont like wordpress at all:
      1. Every child can play with it. No Big deal!
      2. All wordpress sites look similar to me.
      3. Loads of Spam comments
      4. No/Less control over layout and configuration
      5. No functionality for user login

      6. In truth for the same content, Joomla is better for SEO than wordpress! This is true in long term; Once Joomla website is ranked on top, it is difficult to outrank it. The reason is Joomla can have articles in one category only and in wordpress any article can fall in multiple categories and tage...so very easy to make a junk website with wordpress...

Joomla websites ranks as good as wordpress when SEO and everything else is setup correctly. I have previously ranked one of my Joomla sites on top of google for a 2 word keyword with medium competition.

Joomla itself and its extensions are in many cases more complicated to use, it takes some time to get used to. But ranks as good as any wordpress site when configured correctly.

For SEO I used a component called "sh404SEF". It's a paid extension and is pretty good.

This Wordpress vs Joomla SEO discussion comes at a good time for me, as I am about to build out what I hope will become an authority site, with that in mind, I was, am leaning towards Joomla, but SEO is definitely very important. With that said, could someone comment on this snippet and link, does this make sense, or is this SEO debate an urban myth?

    "Drawbacks of a Joomla CMS
One of the biggest drawbacks of a Joomla CMS is that it lacks SEO friendly URLs and code. While SEO plug-ins can be added to make a Joomla CMS more optimized for search engines, not everyone will know to do this, nor will the plug-in compare to a CMS that is internally designed to be SEO friendly. This is not a small detail. Regardless of how fantastic a business website is, or how many bells and whistles it has - if Google can't find it, then consumers can't find it. Another potential drawback is that even if an SEO-plug-in is added to a Joomla CMS, it may require a lot of manual changes in addition to what the plug-in modifies. Additionally, most SEO plug-ins only deal with one or two aspects of on-site SEO, such as page titles, meta descriptions or meta-data, and URLs. According to my experience, WordPress is the best CMS application to design web site. It is very easy and very friendly for SEO. It is very effective plug-ins to make work easily. I prefer it than Joomla.

    Thanks.

I must be living under a rock as I am still on Blogger. I wonder why everyone I know is using Wordpress but never have I heard of Joomla. I guess I'm off to check it out. I learn a lot here.

I believe that Joomla can be made more SEO Friendly than Wordpress, using the right Compontent and the right Settings.
Also Joomla gives better user experience for the vistors of your site, and the templates are nicer too.

it would really depend which angle you are going with, high cost development to create all the right plugins you need for joomla leaves no reason why you can out rank a wordpress site without any problems at the end of the day its the site content and on-page seo +backlinking which will still be the same.
Wordpress just has the fastest and most free resources from all CMS which is why we also preferr using it even for large scale business sites

I found Joomla too difficult to use. Wordpress is so easy and I love all the plugins.

Notepad can create sites that rank higher than wordpress or Joomla. :p

The real question is, which tool gets you a SEO optimized site quicker, cheaper, and easier? Wordpress, of course.

I would still prefer Worpdress SEO plugins as they've been tried and tested by most web designers. I know a lot of commercial web design services companies who are utilizing Wordpress SEO.

They're both content management systems, meaning they're tools in the hands of developers. A skilled developer can use either tool to their fullest advantage.

At the end of the day, a specific CMS won't be that big of a factor for SEO results. People tend to support the system they first learned (which in most cases is WordPress).

All I use is Joomla and to be honest, beyond building a quick web 2.0 never used wp for anything serious. I love it because I am a software developer by profession and it is designed for me to apply changes to at the back end. If it doesn't have a position I want for something, I merely add it in a few minutes.

If you think ranking one CMS is easier then the other, then thats like saying Google will think a WP is MFA before a Joomla site. There is no foundation for such a statement, it never can be proven due to the fact you can't create an true comparison.

The best SEO plugins do cost money... don't people sell WSO's here for rehashed info thats been done a million times over and is even free on the web if you really look and research yourself?

I love it, does mean it is the best CMS.. just means it is what I like.

We can design a great looking website with Joomla but from the SEO point of view joomla lacks far behind than wordpress. I was a fan of joomla once, but now I prefer wordpress. The main reason is that Wordpress can drive mass traffic to my website than joomla.
