Has anyone else notice this lately? or is it just me.
I just put two different keyword phrases in google and had gotten a higher count with the words in "Quotes" then without the quotes.
Normally, you should see a higher result count without the quotes then with them right ?

    Not if google is trying to figure out what it is exactly
    you want.

    They may guess a broader topic, or a narrower one.

    They even change your search words and add or subtract
    from the results. They may even disregard the quotes.

    Example, I do a search for

    face book, get 16 million results. (They think I mean facebook)

    "face book" I get 43 million results. (They still think I must mean facebook)
    But because I put it in quotes, they are finding facebook pages and
    pages with face book next to each other. So I get more results by
    using quotes.

    If you were disappointed in your results today, lower your standards tomorrow.

    The bigger question is why are you looking at the # of results?

    In terms of assessing competitiveness for a keyword phrase, it's a useless metric...
