With everyone using article spinning and software such as article marketing robot to get 1,000's of backlinks, is it even possible to compete by doing SEO manually like you're supposed to?

If so how?

It can be done. It will just take longer.

Not knowing anything about your website and keywords, it's hard to say how long it will take to get the ranking you want.

If you have an RSS feed or can add one to your site, that will help. Then, every time you add new content, send it out on your RSS aggregator.

Add new content to your website as often as you can.

Work at building your backlinks. Try to add at least 5 quality backlinks per day.

The search engines like new content and an active website.

thanks for the reply chooch =) I have a friend that swears by automatic article submission but at the same time can't that get your site penalized if done wrong? What's your opinion on Panda, do you think Google will eventually be able to tell if a articles have been spun and disregard or penalize for all links from spun content? In that case the people who did it manually would have the upper hand...

Doing it manually will take you 50% more of the time that you can get your site on the top position. However, doing so can provide you with high quality backlinks that will surely last. There are other software in the market that could be of great help such as SEnuneX, Bookmarking Demon, etc. Just choose the ones that are of great caliber and have been the choice of most Internet Marketers.

It doesn't have to take forever, actually. If you write some really great articles and then syndicate them as much as you can, you can get a lot of high quality, relevant backlinks.

It takes time, but its worth it!

After you build up your links you dont have to worry that any one will give you a penalty for that. So dont buy links, build them on your own!

I totally agree the amount of automated blog comments I get per day to one of my sites and all I do is delete them.

Spending 10 minutes to actually read someones blog post and then contribute a decent comment to it will get it approved and a backlink that actually lasts

1 useful comment > 5000 crappy generic ones.

Thanks for the feedback. For doing it manually is there a list somewhere of the top spots to submit articles, directories?

Don't be impressed when you hear something like "thousands backlinks with the push of a button" those links are worhtless and could even harm your site. Additionally article marketing where you submit spun articles into hundreds of article directories doesn't worth the effort and the benefits are close to zero.

Softwares are good only if you want to submit your links on social media sites or website directories.

It is much more effective to write quality articles (or pay someone else to write for you) and ask authority bloggers of your niche to publish them with your links on their blogs as guest posts, in that way you will not only get quality backlinks but traffic too

Well said! Not to mention the traffic you get will actually be interested in what you may have to offer.

IMO, spun content article page would not gain that much page authority as a manually written content can extract. But if only backlinks matters majority part of the SERPs then it would definitely more beneficial to spin and post the articles.

So basically 1 article = 1 backlink? or do you submit the same article to multiple sites. In that case wouldn't that be duplicate content?

Of course only on one blog per article and usually 1-2 links, 1 or 2 link might sound too little but trust me they are much more valuable than thousands links from conventional article marketing, and remember you don't just get quality back links but targeted traffic too and additionally if you write regularly you can establish your self as an expert on your field. Another benefit is that you will develop relations with other influential bloggers on your niche which can help you in many ways in your business

There is No Doubt that Manual Link Building is very Slow Process But is very Beneficial for the site in the long Run! In my Opinion Thousands of Automated Back links are useless in Front of Some Manual Qualitative Back Links!!

If you are beginners, I recommend you chose the low competition keyword, and build link manual or use tool with less than 50 links per day. When you know how can get the first page on Google, you can do all of this work by tools.

I was doing it manually until some IM'er started competing with me for the same keywords and using automated SEO/buying SEO services. I had to do the same if I wanted to compete.

    What about this approach:

    1. Use automated software to submit articles spun to 75% or higher to top 100 article sites every month
    2. Use auto software for getting directory listings
    2. Analyse competitions top backlinks and visit them to manually to get backlinks. Have 10 100% unique articles written and submit them to article directories each month.

    Generally, no...

What I mean by that though is that there aren't many types of linkbuilding that you should be doing manually. Either you should outsource it, and/or use tools to do it.

Now here's the thing though, you can get higher quality backlinks from "manual" backlinking. For example, guest blogging. Although the research process, content writing process and just about everything could be outsourced by setting up proper systems and training your team.

    Remember, work smarter not harder.

I understand that I could outsourse it but wouldn't the people I outsource to use the same software that I could purchase/learn myself? The problem is that I don't know how to train and manage an outsourced team when I don't know how to do it manually myself. Is there a complete guide to Off Page SEO somewhere?
