A bit of an opposite question to most on here, does anyone know why I could be ranking on Google for my website that I created one week ago - it's still in the development process but I bought the domain name and VPS and have been working on it (no SEO yet done), but I'm still ranking on Google! any ideas?

  • You are probably only ranking for low competition keywords.

    • For which keyword you are ranking so? I think it is for choosing some keywords which have very little competition.

    • Yeah, and what are you ranking for? If it's some obscure keyword that is barely anywhere else on the internet and you're the only one optimized for it, you're gonna rank for it.

  • Let me guess, your site is focused in micro niche keywords. If the keyword's competitive is low enough, your site will raise and stay, if not, it will be down next 1 or 2 weeks. This is my experience while building micro niche sites.

    • Google likes to filter new content into its SERP.

You might be ranking now, but you can guarantee that this will be bouncing around heavily in the next couple of months.

I find that only until you rank top 3 can you really feel safe that your current ranking will stay.

In my experience, once I breach top 3 in the SERPS, my page tends to stay in that position for quite some time.
  • This may seem absurd, but are you sure you are actually ranking?

Are you logged into Google? Are you seeing personal results?

Google will change your SERPs based on what sites you visit and how you interact with searches. If you found your site in the search results and clicked on it, it will naturally move up if you are logged in. Hence, personal results.

      I agree...

Sounds like personalized SERP results based on OPs browser history.
    • Personal result? well, this is some new info to me!
      maybe that's why the ranked website order change after the page loads for awhile? the first I click on search button result is different after the SERP loading finished;

Sounds like all the reasons were giving up above. But Without the name of the site and the key word that your ranking for, it's hard for us to give you the exact reason why.

Does your keyword that your ranked for have any Exact Searches Per Month based on Google's Keyword Tool? If not, there is your answer as well.
  • 1. How much competition is there?

    2. Maybe you have good content..?
  • On page SEO must be really good I'm assuming
  • Can u please tell me for which keywords your site is ranking...?

    • Sorry for the late reply everyone, some keywords include "ireland holiday homes, dongal holiday homes, yew tree apartment, yew tree cottage" - I just assumed that Google would never naturally rank you, unless you submitted your website to them - I'm not complaining about it anymore though!
  • Could be the google honeymoon period?

    • Possibly!! I've noticed my rankings are altering dramatically, not just up and down a free places, but moving up and down in the 20's!, obviously this is coming for a new website but it seems to be everyday since I put the website live!
  • First off it's likely you are ranking for keywords that aren't so competitive.

It's not uncommon for this to happen and if anything that's a good sign as long as there are people searching for the terms.

I've built websites in the past that literally just have the domain + wordpress installed (Title + Description) and they ranked #1 for the primary keyword before the website was even built.

Seeing as I have over 100 websites, many of my websites are still in development phase because I start on them and then have to put attention on something else. In doing this I have come to the realization that there are a lot of small things in play.
    • Exact match domains (to primary keyword)
    • Low competition (ignore Google's competition metrics at the top)
    • Keyword used in the beginning of the page title.
    • Keyword used within the description (don't believe this helps with SEO, but it can help with click throughs as it becomes bold in search engines)
    • WordPress it's great for low optimization and even without doing very much it's possible to rank.

    Hope those little tips help
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
