Magestic SEO or whatever the one that Market Samurai uses, seems to be good

SeoSpyglass is better though, I think but takes too long

I don't know why some people say this. Does it take a little bit of time to run on a site with a ton of backlinks? Sure. But look at all the information it brings back for you.

SEO Moz open site explorer is good but you need to be a paid member to get full functionality.

My vote goes for SeoSpyglass as well. I agree it gives a lot of info about the checked backlinks.
E.g If you spy on your competitor you will have better knowledge what you have to prepare for.

MajesticSEO is the best currently for strictly checking backlinks outside of YSE.

If you want additional data and to "dig deeper" than by all means SEOSpyglass is the best bet. It'll crunch a lot of data and provide a tremendous amount of feedback that would take you ages to find or manually look up.

If you're not doing too much research, Ahrefs allows up to 15 searches a day for free.

After that it's about the same price as Majestic (I think - Majestic are showing me prices in £'s as I'm in UK)

I personally like SeoSpyglass. It provide more info about my competitor. By this it helps me estimating the required time and work for wining the race.

    LOL@people recommending SEOspyglass.

SEOspyglass gets their backlinks data from YSE, now that YSE is shutting down SEOspyglass has/will stop returning any data.

Either Majestic SEO or Ahrefs.com for now.

Pretty much every single backlinking tool gets its data either from YSE (certainly not for much longer) or SEO Majestic or SEOmoz.

Majestic SEO (Fresh Index) is my preference but I usually compare it to Open Site Explorer to be safe

Open site explorer is my best bet, although to get complete functionality off it you need to be a paid member. But atleast you still get information from it unlike on others where you should pay first before being able to get any information from them.
